Yes, it's a sports thread stickied in General Discussion; but it's a sports event that only comes around every four years and EVERYONE ends up watching some of it. Even those of you who don't particularly like sports. You know who you are.

Basically talk about anything regarding the Olympics; how the opening/closing ceremonies were, the inevitable doping failures and world records broken, good performances by your country, complaining about NBC's coverage in the States, etc. Only thing I'd avoid is any political discussion; you can definitely start another thread if you want to get into that, this is all about the Games.

Right now I'm watching the Men's Cycling Road Race; but CBC has us well covered in Canada. Two English TV channels, two French TV channels and NINE online TV channels for us; I have the choice right now of watching volleyball, beach volleyball, weightlifting and fencing online. (Yeah, the selection will get better as the games go on) And if you want to know what the first highlight of the games will be, aside from the first medals today, it would likely be the swimming finals starting in primetime tomorrow night (or Sunday morning in Beijing).

Well I definitely won't be watching it live (hah, 2am? I've got better other things to do (namely, sleep) at that time (sigh, school starting in a few days )), yay California!..

I was just watching the replay of the Opening Ceremonies, which were amazing. Also, some fencing, badminton, and women's soccer.

However, when I flipped over to MSNBC, they mentioned that an American somehow related to one of the Olympic coaches was killed. Hopefully that will be an isolated occurrence.

I was hoping to watch it, but I went to dinner with my father instead and followed up with 3 hours of playing with my best friend followed by new episodes of my favorite shows, Monk and Psych.

I'll wish I could have seen the opening ceremony, though.

I will try and watch it if I find a channel with good coverage.

Swimming and Gymnastics are supposed to be the most watched events by the USA this year. Swimming because of Phelps and his sexy Butterfly stroke :3 (and the other 7 as well...) and Gymnastics for the rookie USA team that is predicted to go up against China in the end.

I did swimming while in high school and even before then it was something that I always loved, so watching an event like this is pretty awesome. Getting to see naked abs is a plus.

I'm a butterflier so...

That's pretty much why I say Phelps has the sexiest butterfly stroke of all time. He's kinda' like my role model! I can't wait to see him do the 400 IM again!

I'm personally waiting for Kate Ziegler since she's kinda' the local hero around here. I met her once at a trial meet, but my friends know her even better since they saw her practically every day at O'Connell High.

The US just gave up the equalizing goal to the Netherlands in stoppage time.

We would have advanced, but now we have two players out for the next game against Nigeria. D'oh.

I woke up to find the USA vs. China basketball game on in the third quarter, so I started watching that until the quarter ended. I must say, I enjoyed watching it more than any other basketball game I've ever seen. Really exciting.

I saw some of the other events yesterday, but I did not find them too interesting.

And I still have not even seen a video of the opening ceremony.

I saw the Japanese on this bar, and they were like flipping around it and stuff and right before that this Chinese guy was doing this awesome thing on top of a rubber stand with two metal bars to hold onto. It was awesome.

I haven't been watching recently. I saw the opening ceremony and that's all. Which, by the way, was spectacular. It definitely took the cake as best ceremony they've seen. The sheer amount of performers and special effects were dazzling. The newscasters mentioned that the guy that created the ceremony had a $300 million dollar budget!

Oh man, was the 4x100 Freestyle Relay awesome. The French talked some trash, then took a body length lead going into the anchor. Somehow, our anchor caught up in the last 50 meters and beat the French by .08 seconds. So Michael Phelps' chances of 8 golds are still alive.

You know what sucks? Deciding to stay up to watch Women's 63kg Weightlifting.

Seeing Canada's Christine Girard work her way into the bronze medal position.

Seeing North Korea's Pak Hyon Suk fail at lifting 135kg once... and twice.

...seeing Suk get the third lift to win the gold medal.

The knockdown effect sees Christine slip into 4th.

Midway through Day 4, Canada still scoreless in the medal count. FSCK.

(...bring on the doping tests, ESPECIALLY for the Kazakhstan woman who won silver.)

(...wait a sec, they have CUTE cheerleaders doing some dance routine to Chinese dance music before the medal ceremony along with the mascots. This is perversely entertaining.)

Watch the swimming tonight; Canada could VERY well win a medal in the men's 4x200 relay.

And on Friday in women's soccer...

Quarter-Final: CANADA VS. USA

There will be blood.

Yesterday I watched the synchronized diving competitions, which were fun to watch... mainly because I didn't even know that synchronized diving existed until now, and it can be interesting to try new things. Furthermore, the idea of synchronized diving is interesting to begin with.

I really haven't been paying attention to the specific teams this time though.

EDIT: WHY DID I SAY "YEAR", I MEANT "TIME"

And Phelps wins two more Golds today. The 200M Butterfly and the 4x200 Relay. That makes him 5 for 5.
