You know how we all said "WOO! IT'S AN NES GAME!" Well... It's a hell of a lot more of an NES game than we thought!

HT: Yeah, there were some things, like you couldn't have more than three enemies on the screen at once, so we had to make sure that that's how it stayed in our game. In the part with the dragon with the flame, [there should be] flickering, and whatnot.

In the options of this game, you can adjust that, unlike the old games. We purposely put some of those old-school bugs into this game, so it does recreate that feel.

You could say that I'm psyched.
Sprite flicker will be on my first playthrough.

Whoops.. well that makes me happy. I swear the title didn't say that before.. or maybe I just miss the obvious.

I'm really hoping Mega Man 9 also starts a trend for more deliberately-old-style games to enter the mainstream market. I feel like this obsession with 3d-gaming that uses the most advanced graphics possible is severely outpacing quality of both imaginative gameplay and intuitive control.

Essentially, this game isn't actually a Famicom game. If it were burned to a cartridge, it wouldn't actually run on a Famicom. It is a duplication of the Famicom capabilities, but within a modern game engine and technology.

HT: Well, when you put it that way... (laughter) This couldn't fit on a Famicom cartridge. It's too big. It's too much for that. It's really emulating the old style of games. But we're hoping that when people play, they feel the same nostalgia that they have when they play the original games.

And there's still a few small things that wouldn't quite work on the NES, but most people wouldn't notice:

- The screen resolution is 256x224, but should be 256x240 (with 256x224 visible in NTSC, full in PAL). Vertical scrolling goes by 224 pixels (which would still be possible but harder to handle), Megaman 1 to 6 all did 240
- Sprites partially offscreen on the left shouldn't be shown, they'd loop back to the right (8bit coordinates) ... except with a PPU switch that hides the first 8 pixels on the left (lowering the viewable width to 248), which Megaman 3 to 6 used, but not 9
- Sound pitch and timing seem more precise than the NES would allow ... note frequencies should be divided from 111861Hz (CPU's clock rate / 16), and any sound change (pitch, volume, note on, etc.) should happen on a new frame, or every 1/60 second (1/50 in PAL), and here I'm seeing perfect vibratos and timing (like 5.75 frames per 16th in Tornado Man's theme, instead of alternating 5-6)
- Too many sprites (over 8 per scanline or 64 total), but possible with flickering

But nice to see that they're really going for the old NES feel ... now since there's a sprite flickering option, what about lag when there's too much stuff going on

In other news, if you missed it recently:
Megaman 9 music remade on NES (or NSF)

This happened in Mega Man 1 too though, and if it's like what I'm thinking, it's stupid. Jump up and fall slow, but walk off a ledge and drop super fast? Forget that, doesn't make sense.

And neither does being warped to a boss's personally-designed stage instead of the boss itself.

It's a game. It isn't supposed to make sense.

And if you walk off a ledge in Megaman without jumping you actually have a chance of survival if you fell slower?

It only happens in Mega Man 1.

Also, I have a reason for Mega Man not being able to warp in close enough.

Electromagnetic pulse shields that Mega Man in his warp mode can't penetrate.

Take the boss out of the room, make that auto-locking door activate more EM pulse shields, then make the walls close in ever so slowly, revealing in creepy manner those spikes that kill you in one hit.
