16 layers = 400GB.

I knew 8-layer existed at one point but it seems Pioneer finally has a drive for 16-layer. Still doesn't beat holo-discs doing 1.6TB, but Blu-Ray would be this gen too. Least you got decent dev on something that won the media war.

That's 5x the storage space on my HD... So I guess I just need a Blu-Ray drive for my comp, a couple of BR discs, and poof I have a whole bunch of storage space...

The problem with that genius plan is that they just announced the technology. We probably won't see 16-layer drives or discs for a few years yet.

Well they also got Maxell or whoever working on some sort of holodisc technology (Tapestry Media, I believe) that does 1.6TB on a disc at maximum with writes of 120MB/s. Media projects to be 120-180 bucks for a single disc and the burner should be about 15,000.

As for HVDs (holographic video discs) in general, they should be able to hit a feat of 3.9TBs for their theoretical max.

Not really, since a hard drive would perform faster and outlive any optical disk most times over constant use.

I don't think I've dealt with 400 GB of data during my entire life. Multiple copies of the same thing notwithstanding.

Well if you don't count Video/Audio Media then no one probably has, personally, anyway. Sure, servers for corporate stuff maybe, or the entirety of something like WOW's character data, possibly, but really, 400GB is alot of space to use without Video or Audio involved.

also, write speeds with it are probably going to be insanely slow with respect to HDs and flash drives. The other thing with optics is, lasers aren't meant to be used continuously. They do burn out over time if they are in constant use.

I have about 2TB of data backed up on DVDs...
