Disc Commander wasn't going to get us anywhere. The drive is shot. It's been clicking, he powered down manually, then his XP installation wouldn't boot and can't chkdsk /r and it became a mess. So I deem it; head crash

Although to that end, if the power button went bad, I don't think it was getting taken care of very well in the first place

Meh, I think the thing was shot in the first place, I just put another bullet or two into it.

Hard powerdowns killing harddrives is something from the 1990s. Most hard drives these days react fairly well to them (although it isn't advisible by any means). If it was already clicking, it was dead long before this.

If you know what brand of drive it is, you might be able to resuscitate it with the specific drive tools just enough to yank whatever data it is off the drive. I'm pretty sure I've heard the method working before but it's likely that it won't work if it's clicking to hell and back. Probably busted head...or even a shot bearing or bad suspension...who knows. You'd have to pull the drive apart and you'd probably'd need a small torx bit to do it.

Well, assuming that the laptop still works, you could just replace the hard drive. They're usually not that hard to replace.
