I haven't been here awhile, but I would like to post here that I somehow got a virus that messes with Windows XP. It makes it close at random times. I can still get on the CPU. It's just a pain to do things with how slow this thing goes. I felt I should let you people know.

Mind just being a tad more specific? You hardly go into anything about the virus at all except what most do as it is.

What do you mean close? Does it come up with an error of some sort? Does it just shut off by itself and restart automatically? Does it sometimes have issues starting up period? You say it's slow but this could very easily be an overheating processor or fan going south and not necessarily a virus. This really isn't enough info to go on.

It goes slow because these antivirus pop-ups come up every few seconds, trying to stop the virus. Though, it never gets rid of the virus. And Windows starts up normally, but after 30 minutes, the Windows task bar on the bottom of the screen disappears and most Windows applications don't work. The virus also hid my C: and D: drive, though, I can still access the C:. But, I cannot access D: for some reason. Good thing I have FireFox for my internet browser.

Also, sometimes the right-click menus don't show up.

Sounds like you've got a rogue software infestation. Those "antivirus pop-ups" never get rid of the "virus" because they're usually the ones screwing with the system in the first place. I've seen and tried to fix exactly the problems you described on someone else's system, but once that stuff latches on, it's hell to remove. I just ended up reinstalling XP.

Read more about it here, or just do a Google search for "rogue antispyware". You can also try searching for the names of those programs that keep popping up for possible ways to get rid of them, but you may end up having to reinstall XP in order to get everything back to normal.

The only thing I can suggest in the future is to be very careful of what you download and install, and if you haven't already, stop using IE and switch to something more secure, like Firefox or Opera.

What are my bets it's SmitFraud?

Probably try something like SmitFraudFix or probably easier on you Spybot S&D. BMF's likely correct that it's rogue software masquerading as virus software. I'd also check to see that whatever virus software you ARE using hasn't already been jacked or compromised.

If you DON'T have anti-virus, you need to get some afterwards. A good start would be either Avast! or AVG.

OK, I think I understand. I just need to know how to get rid of this thing. Redownloading XP may work. But, if it involves using a disk, I can't do it. My disk drive is hidden and can't be accessed.

And another thing, when I try formatting my C: drive, it says it's in use and can't be formatted, even though nothing seems to be using it. Does that mean something?

Well first off, don't format C.

Second off, of course you can't format C when you're using it. You delete the program capable of running the entire operation by doing that and the drive is locked for use. Reinstalling/Reformatting MAY help but it's generally the LAST DITCH EFFORT taken after everything else has failed. EVEN STILL that doesn't guarantee that you will get the virus off just by a simple format. There are MBR (boot record) viruses that can tank a hard drive, regardless of formatting, and keep it infected even afterwards.

Likely, it's nothing like that. As I said, get Spybot and use a virus scanner and see if you can remove it. Worse case scenario, if you really can't figure it out...download HiJackThis and post the log that you get here by copy and paste.
