Well, I don't plan on upgrading my older computer from XP anytime soon- it'd probably explode and die anyway. Though Vista works fine on this new laptop... And of course,

"In addition to supporting XP through 2014, Microsoft is now actively promoting a program that allows customers to downgrade Vista systems to XP through a loophole in the company's licensing terms. Microsoft's software license allows customers who purchase a copy of Windows to install and run a previous version of the OS at no additional cost.

"It's true that we will stop selling Windows XP as a retail packaged product and stop licensing it directly to major PC manufacturers [after June 30]," wrote Veghte. "But customers who still need Windows XP will be able to get it," he said. "

Now you can get XP, but first have to buy Vista anyway?

Uh, no? If you already have Vista, they'll let you get XP for free if you don't have it yet.

A couple more things unravel about this today...

Windows 7 WILL SHIP in 2010...

A large electronics company will bypass upgrading to Windows Vista...

Interestingly, this article at ZDNet claims that Intel did the same thing with Windows XP vs. Windows 2000... Actually, a lot of the stuff about Vista reminds me of the early days of XP... which hopefully is a good sign? (Though from my experience even modern XP is still a downgrade compared to 2000)

It seems the internet community is split on that. Half say 2k > XP, the other half say 2k < XP. From what I've seen, anyway.

I would have kept using 2K if it weren't for you meddling kids the fact that a lot of new driver packages simply won't install in it anymore, even though the two OSes have pretty much the same driver model.

makes me wonder if it is because the installation checks to make sure you have XP...so maybe you can hack the installer to not check for windows version

I tried modding the INF in ATI's Radeon driver package, and Windows bluescreened every time I rebooted...however, another guy released a package that does basically the same thing, and it worked fine. *shrug*

I figured it would just be less of a headache in the long run if I took the plunge and installed XP. I admit it hasn't been as horrible as I expected it to be, but there are a lot of niggling little issues (mostly video glitches stemming from XP's GUI enhancements) that make me long for 2000's simplicity and stability.

Watch Windows 7 get pushed back farther.

And personally, Win2k is an absolute nightmare. Maybe I just have bad luck with systems that run it, but I've always had far better luck with XP...

Yes! I and the other people who signed the petition have won! In your face Vista!

Er. Yeah.

I seriously doubt the random online petitions asking for longer XP support made that much of a difference.

You'd be surprised what a bunch of people bitching about a popular product will do when publicized highly enough by the right people directly at Microsoft's face.

Of course, all the new computers I saw still had Vista

You know, I'm actually fairly sure the license Windows uses allows you to install any earlier version of Windows at no charge so long as you have a valid license, so you could just buy Vista and then, well...

I'm iffy on the details, but from what I remember hearing...

I've been seeing XP go for higher than Vista too, and not just in store.

As for the new comps, a LOT of them have XP downgrades attached to them because a LOT of computer industries know how much of a bad egg Vista really is and just refuses to get themselves in a position where they have to deal with the customer being unsatisfied. Hell, I'm sure the solution takes an AWFUL load off tech support, for instance.

Sounds like you need to get Vista Ultimate or Business in order to be able to downgrade for free.

(Newegg.com is selling Ultimate for $180, Business for $140. XP Pro is $140, so... it's not much of a bargain, really.)
