Running Windows Vista Home Basic on an Acer Aspire 3680

Everything was running fine until I had to end Photoshop's process, then I think that could've corrupted a system file

Afterwards, I found I was unable to get Explorer.exe running, regular and safe mode, I tried a system restore, nothing, and then, me being stupid, attempted to run a program in normal mode instead of safe mode. It crashed, and I had to restart the computer.

Now, when I try to run it, it bluescreens with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE,
and I can't get the System repair tools to detect drive C.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that Vista apparently hid it's recovery tools away on a hidden drive labelled X.

And only to make things worse, this thing didn't come with an install, or a restore disk.

Posting from my Wii by the way.

Run Disk Commander. Find it yourself.

Optionally, try finding Hiren's BootCD. It might help too, and includes drive recovery tools.

If all else fails, contact Acer about getting an install DVD.

Because it's 1:30 AM right now, parents wouldn't like me being on.

Told you not to do a system restore when you were getting CHKDSK errors ESPECIALLY in Vista but oh well...

You'd probably do better just finding a copy of XP, low-level format that drive with all zeroes (with something like KillDisk) due to Vista doing weird shit with ReadyBoost to the drive's partition, and reinstalling with that in mind.

Copies of XP, anymore, are made to where the COA verification crap is pretty much useless now...so I'd probably try XP Pro SP2, upgrade to SP3 if you can. There are even some copies of XP out there that are custom builds that work very well (been able to try a few) that you may want to check out...some that even masquerade as Vista when they aren't even.

Ultimate Boot CD might be another thing you can try.

However, I'd do this if and only if you can't get your recovery tools working. Your system was already overheating as it was and it was very likely that this was also causing your hard drive to overheat which I've mentioned before can cause data loss. It was very likely that your System Restore data was corrupted and your hard drive data was toast anyways. That's also not to say that you might not have other problems, hence why I suggested a low-level format outside of a regular one because it may have corrupt MBR and partition information in track 0. This is unlikely, but the index errors you received in CHKDSK throw red flags for me.
