She grew up in Japan, so yes, she speaks Japanese.

so after a while we realize #japanese is a channel for Japanese to go learn English, so we started messing with them. I cracked out the old starfox jokes and funnily enough, a few of them responded...

We went to 2ch for totally different reasons, but we found a goldmine of funny in #japanese.

I think a lot of Japanese people have trouble with the language at one time or another. How could you not with that many crazy moon symbols?!

I don't think I'll be understanding those Asian hieroglyphics any time soon either...

Basically

I know the language pretty well, however I grew up on Osakaben, a lesser used dialect. Mix this with the fact that I do have a minor reading disability, and you get a pretty wacky situation in that channel. Apparently they love and miss me now xD

Also, the reason I was copy-pasta'ing lines in the first place is I don't have the IME, so I need to use character mapper to enter Japanese characters -.-

In the same way you don't get confused by the thousands of different combinations of those 26 letters.

Yes, compared to the several-hundred-if-not-thousand dictionary of Kanji.

26 is an awful lot.

Actually, you would be surprised. In the same way we don't get confused with the common hirigana and katakana combinations, there are some kanji that even people like my mother cannot read or immediately identify. It really is an inefficient language imho...

From what I heard, the Japanese keep messing with their language. Post WWII they decided to reverse how things were read. So as an example, back then, NIN-TEN-DO would be DO-TEN-NIN... All that Kanji plus that... ... I think I'd go insane...

Don't forget the time the government tried to retcon kanji and replace it with Korean hangul, claiming it was "original ancient Japanese characters" before Chinese influence.

Hillarity ensued when Korea called them out on it.

Wow, I don't think I ever want to find out how the average Japanese teen writes text messages and talks on the internet. It's bad enough that people can fuck up English and it's 26 letters so well, I can only imagine what it's like with several hundred characters...

They use the Japanese equivalent of AOL speak. bassically a bunch of incomplete thoughts that seem to mean something to them... Whenever Erika goes asfsdfasdfsdf in 2ch IRC, you'll know what's up...

I thought it was thousands... in 3 written languages if I remember

Kanji, Kana, and... Hirigama?

I'm learning to speak Japanese before I ever attempt to read it. I mean, Subject Object Verb is hard enough without having to memorize tons of different characters.

EDIT: Not to mention that I also should learn some words first. XD

Yeeeeeah. My brain melted thrice at the Japanes equivalent of "hOW R U 2DY" speak (the worst was when they mix/disregard character sets that normally you just wouldnt/couldnt do but i guess to be lazy they think typing everything in katakana is TRENDY)

Also the three systems of writing are Hirigana (main), Katakana (foreign/adopted words), and Kanji (Chinese characters, can represent multiple hirigana/entire words/concepts)
