...the mom and pop run gas stations are unable to program any dollar amount above $3.99.

Here is the article.

Maybe they should allow them to keep it at 3.99, especially the stations that are in the middle of nowhere.

I just don't understand why we can't go back to <$1 a gallon...

$3.99(9) is a weird limit, I wonder what that comes from

There was a similar problem here a few years ago when gas first hit $1.00/L, since the gas price signs around stations (not sure about the pumps) only had space for 99.9 (¢/L) ... it's been fixed in different ways since then, like using a "10" digit (and above) or putting a 1 in front

There are a few small signs with flip-up numbers around here that seem to be missing the bottom half of the first "3" in each price. It probably wasn't there to begin with.

Reading the article, it shows 2.99 being the limit beforehand (maybe even 1.99 before that) and they had to up it to 3.99 with an upgrade of about 600 or 700 bucks.

A new gas pump costs 10-15K. I'd say fuck that too.

There's gotta be a not-so-difficult way to get around that with a mechanical pump system. By that I mean the 3.99 limit, not the 99.99 limit.

It would make sense to just set the price to $3 for everything, then just multiply the gallons shown by the correct amount (not the price on the dials); of course, this takes a bit of "pumper intelligence" in that they have to realize that the price shown isn't correct, which is probaby why this won't be done.

Full-service gas stations (that pump the gas for you) won't have much of a problem with this.

Actually this was done at a point...whatever the price is supposed to be, just halve it. Then when it comes time for the person to pay, double that.

So if it's supposed to be 4.50 a gallon, halve it on the pump to 2.25 then run it. If the person got 30 bucks of gas, he pays 60 at the end of it. 2.25 x 2 = 4.50.

...or basically what I just said, except with 1/2 instead of an arbitrary number

The problem is that that's apparently illegal, and the state (I think it was Virginia) got the gas station fined when it was reported...

As I expected, it's happening...

As the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in New York City hit a record $4.20 on Wednesday, the State Bureau of Weights and Measures gave station owners like Mr. Staiano the official go-ahead to charge by the half-gallon, provided they can prove that they have ordered new pump computers that can handle prices up to $9.99 a gallon. The new computers cost about $400 each, not including installation fees; Mr. Staiano said his would arrive in about a month.

I think what should be underlined is they're preparing themselves for 9.99 a gallon...

It's already around $1.40/L ($5.30/gallon) at Montreal, almost as high as the fall 2005 peak ... and I'm hearing it might go all the way up $2 during the summer, or at least over $2 within a few years (that's still not $9.99/gallon ... but getting closer)

In Massachusetts a few towns have had long-standing laws against self-service gasoline (belief that it's a fire hazard, mostly), which are now starting to disappear in hopes that it will cause a slight drop in prices...

I don't know how much it will really help, though- the neighboring town to here still has its ban, and their gas tends to be cheaper than here, which has self-serve allowed. Plus the full service is convenient, it'd be a shame to see it go.
