Well, I figured I may as WELL make a thread since it was already mentioned in a thread title obscurely...

You're basically looking at a dungeon-crawl game here. Dungeons are randomly generated and there's really only ONE goal in the entire game stated down to the letter in the start of this game. Get to the bottom of this place.

Sounds simple right?

Well, unfortunately, this also stems around you dying. A lot. From what I got out of the four hours or so I dropped into it last night and the eight or so resets to level 1 after dying with inventory clear that was goddamn frustrating when it happened the first time and every time afterwards, it likes to be just hard enough to piss you off to the point where you can't really blame the game more than your dumb arse when you end up biting the big bazooka.

You die? Hey, no problem...well if you were fortunate enough to preserve your items and find places where you can throw them back out to an inventory status. Reset to level 1 afterwards...a little more frustrating. However, you get more out of the story as you die, weirdly enough. Each time you die it just gets a little easier as you progress through the system and learn how to use it. The inventory system it uses makes it to where you CAN'T be an item monger. At some point, you need to find uses for what you pick up, analyze and learn how to use or just pitch them entirely or...preferably...at enemies for damage (or in the worst case scenario, helping them out...I wouldn't toss an invincibility whatever at one, let's say). Some of these items you pick up, also, have to be analyzed...which can make it a bit of a pain and sometimes a costly decision when you use said wildcards if you need to or you're pressed to a circumstance where you have no other choice.

That's not to say that you can't take advantage of the system, since there are dozens of different ways this will pan out for the individual for the weapons and defense items you get in the day. Also taking advantage of the system allows you to pump up your character faster than leveling would allow...if you know how to.

That's another thing.

HP is one thing, VT is another. When you start out at level 1, you're given 99HP, 99VT. As time goes on, every few seconds, your VT drops by 1 until it's extinguished. What happens when it drowns out? Well, you don't die, but your HP starts slowly dropping down the crapper until you ARE dead. Obviously, taking damage from enemies speeds this process. Now there are items that help that out to where you can recover and even RAISE your VT and HP to help this out and it's very necessary later on as the dungeons get more and more complex.

Speaking of damage, the enemies are as random as the dungeons are but progressively get harder as you go deeper in and level your character further. Attacking is in a matter of whatever you have equipped alongside of the SQUARE and X buttons, with SQUARE giving you a normal/combo attack with multiple taps, holding SQUARE to charge for a knockback heavy attack and X to launch a special (but slow) interrupt attack which stuns an enemy. No dodge aside from you manuevering out of the way with the BAD camera angling and stunning the enemy before they launch an attack...if you're fast enough. Fortunately, like KH, there is a lock-on command by holding L2 but that doesn't help the camera turn in the right direction...

So your good and bad that I've seen thus far is that...it's one innovative and probably DEEP game, the music that I've heard thus far is pretty top-notch, and the game plays with a nice amount of difficulty (changed at the start with EASY, NORMAL, and HARD) but that NICENESS can go to OVERLY VENGEFULLY RIDICULOUS in .2 seconds which will give a LOT of people a VERY bad first impression...especially if you aren't hardcore on RPGs.

If you pass this ego line of NOT being anti-social twit with a god complex and hate to hell to lose...I would try it out...if you aren't big on RPGs or dungeon crawls or fail the ego drive, stay the fsck away before your ego gets jammed in a blender and gets destroyed constantly and consistently.

That said, I'll likely beat the pants off this eventually. I hate losing.

I'll just say this sounds suspiciously like Nethack (along with its absurd difficulty) and leave it at that.

I was going to say that, then I noticed your post. Yeah, Nethack-ish indeed.

I actually was going to mention that in the post and forgot to but meant to add 'for graphics, it's eh, but take it as NetHack with boosted graphics and you've got the idea'.

Oh...and it's PS2/WII btw...though the original was on the Saturn and later the PlayStation but only in Japan...took 10 years to come stateside in a buffed up port.

Oh...and it's STING/ATLUS again. Remember them? Riviera? Yggdra Union? Rage?

That explains the asinine difficulty and/or "why am I still playing this unfair mess" factor, at least.

Yea, I didn't notice it until I had died and went to the title credits and it read STING.

I went 'ohhhhh...that's why'. I missed the intro because I was in the other room fixing dinner.

I actually downloaded this a while back and I should check it out, but you want to talk cheap?

Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer for the DS. You die, you're sent back to the very first village at Level 1 with everything stripped unless you bothered to save some items in the Warehouse. And of course you're not going to put your best weapons and armor in there, are you? That would just be silly. And when you start thinking "hmm, it's getting tricky, maybe I should put this sword, shield and EXP gaining ring into the Warehouse", you step onto a trap that spawns four monsters around you; monsters you can deal with, but still. Four against one.

And then one of the enemies kills the little girl who's part of a sidequest and he levels up to something that you should absolutely NOT be facing at this point and you get bounced around back and forth.

And then you die.

And then you have to start alllllll the way from the beginning with nothing because you took a chance and didn't put anything into the Warehouse.

...Yeah, I'm pissed.

Yea...this game's pretty much no different.

I had a similar thing happen when I was down about 12 levels (out of 999, I think) and ended up having a 'must not destroy' item get broken open stepping on a trap.

Needless to say, it got a shut off right then.

This game gives a pretty awful first impression. I just picked it up yesterday.

Upon starting, I walked around to talk to people whose bad voice acting immediately detracted from the eerie atmosphere. Once in the dungeon, I find that I'm battling the camera just as much as the monsters. I've run into a few maidens who babble half-coherently before vanishing, as if they've taken a load of hallucinogens, in traditional "pseudo-deep" anime fashion. It's a good thing the main character is mute and can't talk back, or the dialogue option I'd pick for everyone would be: Grab [person/being] and shake him/her violently while shouting "WHAT IN THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! AND DON'T YOU DARE DISAPPEAR ON ME BEFORE EXPLAINING YOURSELF!"

It intrigues me enough that I won't just shelve it indefinitely, but it's one of those games I'll not often be in the mood for.

I've had a few amusing deaths so far, mostly just after telling myself "I think this is a trap." and stepping anyway.

...Yea, I've had those "YOU RAN INTO A SWORD YOU RETARD" moments myself...mostly tossing a boom bone at enemies and ending myself as well via comparable rocket-nick deaths in DOOM.

I'm starting to warm up to this game. The voice acting of people I've encountered in the tower itself is much better and more fitting than the voices of those outside. Still, once a long tower run ends, thats pretty much it for one day.

Today I've found three idea sephirae and failed to transfer all three of them >.<

The first one was dropped in the tutorial dungeon, and I tossed it at an orb-shaped object thinking it was a consciousness orb. Nope. It got stuck on top of the orb out of my reach.

The second one I failed to transfer as I missed my first throw and forgot to make sure it was readied for the second throw. The collector received an unidentified bone instead.

The third.. I died too soon to transfer. On a fresh floor I got the bright idea to use Summon and Blizzard torturers in succession. After the Summon I was afflicted with lethargy, lust, and confusion before I could do the Blizzard and died spinning slowly in a crowd of glowing women.

It's better than the first impression led me to believe, for sure.
