...I have no comment.

Anyway last night I could go to sleep and ended up falling asleep at 7:30 in the morning and waking up at 3. I have no idea why.

I normally can't.

Which is why I was really confused. So I coursed a song in Stepmania.

Normally I go to bed at midnight, but lately I've been staying up past that for some reason. Though, I'm tired now, so I might go to bed on time tonight...

Oh, and I finished that trophy.

I need about 8 hours of sleep lately; this job is so boring... it's also like a start-stop thing requiring even more effort than usual.

I find that without enough sleep, I'll start nodding off later in the shift to the point things start happening without me noticing any more (it isn't unusual to have a few blank spots on the data sheet near the end any more)...

The fact they have me working 10 hours straight with my breaks fizzling into nothing isn't helping either

what is it that you do? breaks are awesome when you can take them whenever you want and when they do not conflict with a meeting.

I'm a data technician (aka "ridership surveyor") for Spokane Transit; I ride busses and use a PDA to mark how many people get off and on at all the stops, along with the times the bus reaches them ("Transit Data Collection Project", the one the Route Planning department uses) ...

My breaks are usually scheduled between busses (i.e., do route 90 for 3 hours, 30 minute break at plaza, do route 29-65 for 2 more, 30 more minutes, then one last route for two hours) ...

...the only problem is that it relies on the busses being on time, so a late bus eats directly into break time; I had 30+30 minutes Saturday that got chopped down to 8+12, meaning I had almost no time (bathroom and running to next bus, basically). Not fun.

Today was supposed to be 15+15, but that got eaten again to about 8+13... not quite as bad but still a nightmare.

A big problem is that, since it involves riding busses, there are a lot of them (anything from 2003 to now) that have "padding-free" seats... so every bump and jolt the bus takes is translated directly into the body. Not so bad for only a 30 minute trip, but when you have to be on them for 8 hours a day... it isn't unusual to come home and feel like your shoulder is just going to fall out of its socket.

(That and I get a lot of grief from drivers and passengers; dispatch was called up because I yawned and some passengers seem to like telling the driver I'm "weird")

People are annoyed by you yawning? That's kinda stupid.

Does it suck being a "ridership surveyor"? It sounds so boring...

I love my hometown bus system because the seats were padded since 1994. So, you are telling me they transitioned from padded to unpadded? other than lower maintenance, it seems like a move that wouldn't go well with passengers.

So yeah, since you have that job, it wouldn't surprise me that you'd drive home rather than take the bus.

I guess that's the only consellation prize to that job...a somewhat decent title for a job of 'I sit on busses'.

Most drivers just call us "surveyors", which is where the idea for my fake badge came from.

It's on the reverse of my real badge (I have two since they kind of botched one) ... I usually set it to this side and only show the real one to drivers so that Fat Bastard and the other hobos and welfare parents don't see it.

It is kind of easy, minus when they give us really inaccurate data, like with a few routes... those usually mean that we have to do a lot of extra work to figure out where we are and where everything is. (Missing stops? Figure out the closest one)

A lot of the time, people just leave me alone... some are disgusting (Fat Bastard is a good example), others are just depressing (unwed mothers, hobos, etc.) ... occasionally they'll try talking to me ("Is that a radio/phone?" "Do you listen to 98.9? It's awesome, I'm a DJ there" "I'm a shit bug") and I usually just ignore them...

Although I did talk to the VP of SFCC's Gamer's Club; she's pretty cool (yes, she's a girl) and I even got the website

Yeah. A nice advantage is being able to see a lot of Spokane('s ghettos) ... considering I haven't been here long, and with gas prices though the roof...

The worst part is when the damn scheduler (HI DAMIAN) assigns the same route all day; the 20-33-44 ("City Loop" afaik) is about 2½ hours long, and I had it 4 times in one day (x2, short break, x2), so it was the same thing over and over and over... needless to say, aches and pains

...then there's also the fact that far too many routes go past The Depression Depot, and a lot of the roads here suck (KSSSHHRRT... KSSHHRRRT... KSSHHHRRRT... go the buses) ...

... and general STA incompetence, among other things.

It's a decent job overall. There are just a lot of downs to it.
