Haha! Oh wow, I recognized those levels instantly. Definitely remember playing them a lot.

Tricky 14 - MENACING!! - I remember playing this a lot simply for the music, if I remember right it was intense.

Taxing 15 - What an AWESOME level - This was pretty far into the game when I was younger, it was crazy.

My sentiments towards these games is a bit backwards. The MENACING!! level looks rather disturbing, but Menace itself is actually your standard issue horizontal shooter. Even Carnage Rift itself didn't feel too moody. On the other hand, the peaceful forest of A Beast of a Level doesn't do so much to convey the dark atmosphere of Shadow of the Beast.

So this thread has really gotten me interested in playing the original again. Though, I'm all for getting a PC version since mouse controls will probably be a lot more fun to play with. What version(s) are the best?

I'll probably try out the DS one in time, though I need a flash drive or something to save it on.

I also don't mind the original graphics at all and actually prefer them (the images GuyPerfect posted is what I remember from the SNES version and I love that style).

I noticed there is some Lemmings collection on the PSX that looks really nice. Though they included the somewhat annoying "Yippee!" sound effect, graphics are different and the music is higher quality too, which doesn't really bother me. I might look into buying that if I can find it, but again, mouse controls would be better here, heh.

DHTML Lemmings doesn't seem bad, just a bit chunky and some of the stuff doesn't seem to work for me.

Without directly linking to (or encouraging the downloading of) old software, I will state that Abandonia has a lot of old DOS games up for download that can easily be played in DOSBox.

The only real issue I've found is that, for whatever reason, the "next level" function doesn't work properly in DOSBox's full screen mode. It goes back to the menu instead of the next stage. Works in windowed mode, though.

Found out why my copy of Awesome wasn't working. It's a 2-disk set, and I somehow downloaded a pair where each was cracked by a different crew. Durrrr... Well, I got a matching set from Horizon and I was good to go.

Holy cow! The game lives up to its name! The music is also extremely good considering, and the game has certainly impressed me. I couldn't find any reference as far as story is concerned, so this music will go down in history as Level 1.

Is there one client that lets you play every classic Lemmings map? I have all of the maps but it's kind of a pain to have to use the rather buggy under DOSbox Lemmings 1 client to play the first ~100 levels.

Lemmings DS is quite awesome for those who have homebrew capabilities on their DS. Also, since this is abandonware I wouldn't really worry about linking to the files (Sony owns the license now and says they aren't continuing the franchise).

edit: oooh, just use Lemmini.

The equivalent would be selling abandonware, or perhaps editing and rereleasing it (which is kind of ironic as this is a ROM hacking forum).

I actually got yelled at for jaywalked at an empty intersection a few weeks ago. Cop on a megaphone... Whoops.

Anyways, I love that this Lemmings for the DS can use custom levels, it's really quite awesome. I haven't truly hit any challenges though.

DOSBox itself can dump audio output to .wav files by pressing CTRL+F6, then stop capturing by pressing it again.

The musics I posted in this thread were recorded from an Amiga emulator, however. All I did for that was load up Audacity and set the recording source to "Stereo Mix," which uses the Windows waveout as the input. Then I just played the game in the emulator and the audio was thusly captured. The hard part was making sure no sound effects got in the way. A little pause here, a little run-away-from-the-enemies there, and you see (or hear) the results.

Do take note that not all systems support Stereo Mix as an input source. It's likely a feature of the sound card. Most newer systems support it, though.

Are you sure the licenses are still that big of a deal? I just grabbed Lemmings for Windows off Underdogs site. Even if it's for Win95/98, seems to run perfectly on XP. Much nicer than DOSBox'n the game, but maybe I'm just lazy.

Yup. Tackled most of Lemmings today. Man, it's almost embarassing that it seems like I used to be better at this game when I was much younger, haha. Though maybe it's just because I had so much more patience back then. Replaying levels over and over wasn't a big deal (regardless it's still not a huge deal, lol).

I definitely favor it over the DOS version. Simpler interface, saves your progress, you can essentially choose any level whenever you want (skip ones too. It does mark down the ones you've beaten though). The controls are more fluid, graphics are better obviously, the music is higher quality, etc. All obvious improvements I guess.

I still have to say I like the music from the SNES version the best though, probably just the nostalgic factor.

Oh no! More Lemmings looks pretty sweet. Cool to see it has a whole new style and levels.

I'll probably check out the other games but I do have to admit, Chronicles looks pretty damn complicated.

Wow, you're right. I was wondering when I was going to reach those levels ... guess I passed most of them. That's a shame.

I like how Oh No! More Lemmings starts off insanely easy then all of a sudden gets insanely hard.
