Well, time to bump an old thread.
I'm not as much of a Mario Kart enthusiast as some (I'm looking at you, Europe), but I enjoy the simple pleasures when they're provided. As many thought of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I think of Mario Kart Wii: It's really more of the same. People driving around hazardous tracks with items. Mario Kart in a nutshell.
The last game I seriously played was Mario Kart 64, so I've probably missed a bit in the intermediate titles, but I do see a number of improvements in Mario Kart Wii.
• Boosting into a wall doesn't immediately ruin your speed, as the Mushroom item gives you a temporary acceleration buff instead of simply boosting your current speed.
• If you're not moving, you don't jump; you go right into "turn in place" mode. This is helpful for getting off of walls.
• Controling the karts and bikes is actually quite intuitive this time around. They're simple enough that tilting the controller makes them go, but they can still make those 90° turns on a dime.
The CPU are just as obnoxious, though. Can't say how many blue shells came up my rear. They take away whatever items you have, so it's a bit of a pain.
One thing I don't like, however, is the Wii Wheel. You can't grip it because the controller's right there in the way. If you slide your hands down, you'll be grabbing the thing on the bottom and reaching the 2 button with your thumb is difficult. If you do find a way to hold onto it where you can get to the B button, the next finger down is wedged between the rest of your fingers and the Wheel casing, which for me became painful until I started hitting the B button with my middle finger. Removing the Wheel altogether and holding just the Wii Remote in my hands was much more comfortable.
I will say that motion control is much better than it was in Excite Truck, though. You don't have to hold the controller level with the floor; it will adjust depending on its detected horizontal tiltitude.
I'll give it some more time later, but I've been playing some City of Heroes (epic Villain archetypes, yay). Next time, I'll likely just use the GameCube controller. |

I managed to grab it today. Only 5 non preordered games were left, so I was a bit lucky again.
I've only played multiplayer with my sisters so far. Unlike half the world, I'm enjoying the Wii wheel. I managed to locate the right area to grip and have since been cruising along in first place. I'm looking forward to playing you guys online soon.

My Site | I'm picking my copy up later - I paid for it in full a while ago. I'm also looking forward to the Wii wheel. Probably will use the same tactics with the online as on DS- only play with friends, though, just to avoid the kind of people who think it's fun and all to snake in online multiplayer.

Yea, I just mentioned that to him, but he's talking more about the "people" who are willing to exploit every glitch in the book to win a race instead of racing to have fun.

I'm sorry, but snaking is removed in this game! Actually, I'm not sorry at all because I hated it, so online is actually fair now. People have been cheating apparently using the ghost system but I don't use that.

Got our copy today and already played some online with it. We went online with our Miis Cpt. Cool and Linebeck and, after only having a few versus races, pretty much won most of our matches. Of course, it was just released today, so...

Apparently snaking... exists but it hardly gives you an advantage. So the technique is still there but it's not very useful at all. You'll just look like a dumbass if you try it.
(Which is good, I can't snake at all.)
VERY quick first impressions... Wii Wheel is comfortable, tracks look pretty decent, I expect to have some great fun with this. Haven't touched Online yet.
And there were a TON of copies at the store when I went today... I must have picked up one of the first few (along with a free Wii hat), so yeah. Better for Nintendo to release today than on Tuesday, though.

Though I'm afraid to admit the new music isn't exactly memorable, the awesome locations more than make up for it.
For some reason it really reminds me of Arcade GP.

| Hey Colin, is it a gray baseball cap by any chance?
Not a huge rush for Mario Kart...we opened at 9am and only had one person come in for Mario Kart.

It's just a white hat with Wii on it. Nothing special but at least it's official.
I would have preferred a t-shirt or a pin or something else, to be honest. But it's free swag.
Anya: That sucks. :\ Then again you're going to make up for that around midnight tomorrow I think.

Decided to give the Wheel another go, but it's simply more comfortable for me to hold the Remote by itself. Maybe it's the Excite Truck instinct, I dunno.
I do like the way they incorporated the New Egg Galaxy tune into the Rainbow Road BGM, though. |

My Site | I like using the wheel.
My favorite new course is Koopa Cape, for some reason I just love that course. Coconut Mall is also very fun, especially seeing your Miis in their various positions... My mother is a horrid driver XD. I haven't bothered to do the retro cups yet in 50cc, just the new ones. I suppose I"'ll get around to them tomorrow.

Yeah, I actually played the first few races without the wheel since my brother was using it. Then, when he realized he didn't know the controls , we looked in the book to discover that what he thought was power-sliding was in fact the brakes, since he told me to use automatic instead of manual. We also then discovered that Gamecube controllers work as well, and I've been using one ever since.
And Koopa Cape is probably one of my favorite new courses, mostly because of how beautiful it is, in and out of the water.
And it's rather amusing seeing our Miis scattered everywhere. One lap in Coconut Mall, I was ran over by a car driven by Spock.

The Wii Wheel is good on most tracks... but pray when you're on Rainbow Road.

Of the control schemes I've played with so far, the Nunchuck is pretty good--so good that I haven't felt the need to plug in a GameCube controller.
Heh, Koopa Cape reminds me of the water tracks in Stunt Race FX/Wild Trax, with the tunnel going underwater and all.
I'm confused as to why the NA localization team changed the names of some of the vehicles. For example, the Rally Romper kart is called Tiny Titan in our version, when the former made more sense(the kart is a nod to Monster in the FDS game Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally).

| I like that Rosalina's voice is still kinda reverby like it was in Super Mario Galaxy. And I ♥ how the Luma giggles when you jump. I last played Galaxy only as far back as January, but that giggle still triggered a flashback. |
