The first Mario World hack I made was Super Mario World ED|TED . It wasn't good... Thanks to all the "helpful" reviews I got from SMW Central users, I decided to make a sequel. This is Super Mario World ED|TED II. It's a simple Mario World hack with no special tiles or other things like that.

I apologize for the wait. I wasted too much time on the opening. But, the patch is up and an outdated preview. The preview only shows world one. Some of those will change in the next patch. They aren't very ED|TED.

EDIT: A new demo is up! The last level isn't available in the patch. It will be in the next one though.

This looks terrible. There's nothing interesting. You didn't even make your own levels. You just hacked up some of the original levels.
You're up against a lot of really good ROM hackers here, and this is just an absolute joke. Sorry.

I think your patch is broken. Everything is really messed up. Based on my limited knowledge of the limitations of the original game and some of the ASM hacks put in place by Lunar Magic, I would guess that your patch wasn't made with a clean ROM.

Doesn't look too terribly interesting. I've always adopted the viewpoint that new graphics don't matter that much if your level design is creative enough, but this seems rather plain and uninspired.

In order to make the patch I had to extend the ROM to 1 meg. You probably need a ROM that was extended with Lunar Magic. But if you did have a 1 meg ROM, then, I'm not sure. Is it a Super Mario World 1.0 (U) [!] ROM? It canNOT be the All Stars version.

There were some beginning levels I was going to fix. If the level was in a speed run level, then I can't change it. I'll make more original levels next patch. Or, at least try...

Why are you even posting a screen of a glitch?

Anyway, I think that the general consensus here is that it looks unoriginal, and I have to agree. After viewing the video, it looks like you are barely editing the levels at all, just moving around a few objects and sprites. You can do better than that.

Here's some helpful tips:
1. When creating your own level, the first thing you oughta do is press Ctrl-Shift-Delete to delete all objects and sprites from the level. This will enable you to create your own original level instead of just moving stuff around.
2. Play around the BG and FG properties. Use different BG's, FG tilesets, sprite tilesets, and colors, so you are able to make a more unique level. Don't just expect to change one color in the BG and think it will look completely new. You don't know how many times I've seen that same Yoshi's Island 1 FG and BG set in hacks, I've been sick of it for years now .
3. SMWCentral has plenty of ExGFX, custom blocks, and sprites. Try some out where you see they will fit well, and use them wisely, without unnecessarily overloading on them.

On another note, that extra clock by the time display in the status bar is unnecessary. Why would you need two things to label the time? Plus, it doesn't look correct on the right-side of the number. I suggest using either just "Time" or the clock.

I don't usually give feedback on SMW hacks anymore, but I thought you could really use some tips.

That's what I did for Vanilla Dome 4. And, I will go back, and fix old levels that weren't in the speed runs.

I'm happy with how Yoshi's Island 1 came out. I may change the palettes, though.

I tried to use Custom Sprites, but couldn't figure it out. Is there a FAQ on SMW Central?

Uhh, whatever you're using to make the patch is probably not a very good IPS patcher if it can't make a patch using an unmodified SMW ROM. Try Lunar IPS.

For reference purposes, expanding a ROM by saving a level in Lunar Magic will also add ASM hacks so the game can load sprites in edited levels. Since an IPS patch is just differences between two files, and the same ASM hacks are in both files, the ASM hacks aren't included in the patch. That's why the patch doesn't work.

Does the file name of the ROM change anything? If it does, the unmodified ROM should be called Super Mario World Original.

Actually, yes it does. It doesn't work that way with Super Mario 64 because a patch made comparing the original compressed ROM and an extended ROM would contain most of the level and graphics data.

Try, for example, saving a text file in a ZIP file. Change one letter in the text file and save it in another ZIP, then make an IPS comparing the two. An IPS file describing 1 byte changed should be less than 16 bytes, but that file will be much larger because of compression. This is why you must decompress Super Mario 64 before applying the patch.
