Ok so, this is hopefully a simple (and the correct) question I've got here. Are most power supplies some sort of standard size? I don't want to get a new power supply and find out it doesn't fit...

As far as I know, if you have one of those towers that are as big as your torso, then, you don't need to worry about the size of the power supply since 90% of them will fit it. What you do need to worry about is whether or not the power supply has the right connectors for whatever you have in your system. The latest Intel chips usually have a special connector in addition to the primary 20/24 pin connector. Also, PCI express and SATA drives have special power connectors too.

I took one from a DOS system and put it in an XP system, if it makes you feel any better. Like neo said, there will be extras for newer ones but that's about it.

Unless otherwise specified to be different that the usual supplies that rely on molex connections (some have those X-connect plugins, etc.), it'll be just fine.

Besides checking to see if it has enough connectors, long enough cables, enough power, or the right type...

There is an ancient power supply type to avoid, but you'll only find it in ancient computers;

AT, which has a power button on a cord. These will NOT work in any computers beyond those with a Pentium 1/2 mobo, maybe an early 3 at best. They were replaced by the ATX version, which happens to not pose the hazard of death by power button (unlike the AT, which ran direct household current all the way up to the power button!!!)

Ok here's a new PSU question: is there any tool/program/whatever that'll tell me how much power the PSU is putting out, and/or how much each component is drawing? I need to find out if the PSU I have is, uh, crappy or not.

If it doesn't list it anywhere on the PSU's outer metallic box itself (That is, no label anywhere), you can pretty well assume it's garbage.

It's "rated" at 500W but I'm doubting that it actually is able to do even 450W. Text on a label tells me nothing; I want to know how much power this thing is really putting out.

It may PEAK at 500W...

I'm not sure but I believe that may be 250W RMS unless otherwise needed. I might be mixing this up with something but...I've got a 450W rated on mine and my X1550 needs that to run. Everything checks out good for voltage except my -12V which is running at -7.6V but it powers just fine and does everything else consistent. Processor, RAM, everything else is getting good voltage.

Your best bet is probably to get a Killawatt or something similar and use it to check the wattage it's drawing from the outlet.

Obviously this measure won't be exact, but it will give you a rough idea.

IF you are that interested in it you should probably read how to set it up to be measured, which includes a multimeter and checking the 12v rails especially.

That said, I generally work by just buying slightly more than what I need, rather than checking specifically each and every bit of it. You don't need to do that unless you're running it really close or have some extreem gaming rig. But I guess it couldn't hurt...

Well what's going on is, I think the 12V rails (14A/12A) might not be powerful enough to run the video card correctly, but there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the crashes; sometimes the computer'll crash after 30 mins and other times it'll run 7+ hours w/no problems. I sent an email to the video card's support people, and they said maybe the card is bad; BMF says maybe the PSU is crappy...I might as well buy a new computer if only I had the damn money to do it .
