Because "ROM hacking" actually implies doing some work.

For example, the (minor) ASM hack I did to SMB1 today could be considered ROM hacking.

Opening up Tile Molester and arranging all the graphics, then editing them by hand could be considered ROM hacking.


Opening up some programming and pushing "insert image" is not ROM hacking.


Personally, I don't mind it, because the vast majority of "SM64 hacks" out there are an eyesore to look at. No offense to VL-Tone meant.


(I say that because SMW had a similar problem when it was released; a lot of god-awful hacks made that were just bad... SM64 is worse, though, because less people are actually doing interesting work and more people are just making Super CrashDunce 64)

I think quite a few Pokemon hacks fall in this category, with a few exceptions.

We stopped calling them ROM hacks when n00bs made simple modifications, hence the term 'mod'ding.

On a side note, even if the term "modding" is used on a web host, they can still find out whether or not it's hacking.

Yea, more people think an "alteration" of a game is a "mod." In fact, if I ever explain what I do to friends they refuse to call me a hacker, because a hacker to them is someone who can break onto your computer.

I have to agree that "push button; get ROM hacks" editors eventually turn it into modding. (Look at SMW) But honestly, being a modder isn't bad either. You can still have nice level design even if you only used an editor.

I've always associated 'modding' with computer games because you see a lot mods for popular games and the companies that make those allow people to use the resources. 'Hacking' is when you create a modification for a game in which the company has not allowed it and/or released resources for people to use to modify their games.

Basically, modifying computer games are mods, modified console/handheld games are hacks. But that's all just my way of seeing it.

Really, calling it modding because some newbie wasn't "leet" enough to do some "real" hacking is just being elitist.

That's not what I meant.

A mod is a simple modification, whereas a hack is something one actually puts enough effort into to make it seem like a new game.

However, Xkeeper there already made note of how people made horrible SMW hacks when LM first came out.

Fixed.

(Although, at the same time, the estimate of 1999 is wrong, also. Final release of that emulator/tool was in 1998, so it started long before then.)

Now, the issue with the ROM hacking/modding phraseology is that similar techniques to even the most advanced hacks, when applied to PC games, are still considered modding instead. As a result, I am forced to agree with FirePhoenix's naming conventions.

(I also call romhacks mods when talking to the... uninitiated. Otherwise, "Super Nintendo hacks" would make them think I was hacking into Nintendo's computers or something )

By that logic, Counter-Strike should be called a hack whereas some romhacks (simple SMW ones) should be called mods? Funny, people would rather call them just what they are nowadays.

Isn't a mod user-made thingie which uses the game's engine/system as a base, whereas hack tampers with the whole engine, altering it to it's own uses? I mean, mods do have custom stuff, but they still use the base engine to work. Hacks make SMW into an RPG etc?
