I recently got an MP3 player to listen to at work. I usually prefer headphones, and the pair I have is fine for home use, but they're really not suitable at work. At work earbuds are pretty much the only choice. I work in a noisy environment 10 hours a day, but I still need to be able to hear certain things. Noise cancelling or closed haedphones block out too much sound, normal headphones don't block out enough, but earbuds work perfectly!

except I can't find a pair I like.

This is mainly because I'm picky, and most pairs just don't want to stay in my ears especially if I'm doing a lot of moving. I've tried a few pairs out, but so far to no avail.

These are the things I'm looking for in a pair:

* Great sound quality

I'd like to have a pair I can wear both at work and at home, and I'm something of an audiophile. I tried this pair, and the sound quality was nearly perfect for my taste. Only problem with them was once again, they wouldn't stay in my ears.

* Must stay in my ears!! (despite +10 hours of activity such as running)

I'm thinking preferably an over the head design such as the ones here. (btw, these are the ones I'm considering trying next, but I'm turned off by the reviews that said they like to slip off.) I'm more used to headphones anyway so that design probably won't annoy me as much. Nothing behind the neck though such as these. I often listen to music at home laying down, and I just don't like this design.

Also, I've never really cared for the rubber tips most earbuds come with because I always lose them and they annoy me, but I'll get a pair with them if I must. Same goes for a clip on design. It tends to annoy me, but I'll get that design if I must.

* Must be comfortable (I'll be wearing them for up +10 hours)

* Must be collapsible (small enough for me to carry in my pocket)

* Must be affordable (preferably under $30)

* I'd be nice if they were black

Color doesn't really matter, but this way they'd match my MP3 player. So, does what I'm looking for even exist?

About the only two I can think of that I personally tried out that come close to that description are:

Sony Fontopias - $39.99+ (maybe less now, $10 more for extension cord/white series)
Koss SparkPlugs - $19.99+

Similarities?

Both are under the ear and both are really good for sound quality. They're lightweight and both didn't seem to do too badly in my experience (especially the Fontopias; I about drooled the first time I put them in a bass-booster CD player).

Differences?

Overall, the Fontopias will probably do a lot better for you but are a little bit odd to wear, since the cord actually manuevers around the back instead of the front like people are used to. Fontopias will also probably have a greater cancellations of outside noise due to its design but, if you turn it down, it shouldn't pose too much of a problem. Those Fontopias are actually going to be better in sound quality too (boasting deep bass to 6Hz and treble up to 23KHz, if I remember whereas the SparkPlugs will only range 15-22KHz or somestuff).

Obviously, the SparkPlugs are cheaper...they have fewer fittings for earbuds than the SparkPlugs and I generally liked the carrying case design for the Fontopias better but, when I sold this stuff at RadioShack for a living, I did have people like them for what they were worth and some even said they liked them over the Fontopias (maybe because of the price; I'm not sure) so they seemed to be a decent alternative. At least this gives you an idea of price versus substance.
