Defective/incompatible RAM, crud in RAM slot, defective motherboard, insufficient power supply. That's what I'd be checking.

The first two are negated because there isn't crap in the RAM slots and the strips are the exact same. I'm going with the last two and that's why I said 'new comp necessary'. For how old it is, getting a new mobo is pointless.

Might as well post it here.

I seem to have a problem with removing spyware. It suddendly hit my computer about 4 months ago, so to solve it, I got Spysweeper and it cleaned out most of the garbage. But the only thing that keeps coming back is Windows Login Hook, which is a Trojan.

Also, IE keeps popping up with ads like every website I go to. It slows down my PC to a crawl, and I always have the task manager up so I can end the application while its loading.

Think anyone could help solve this issue?

See what this does for you. That or PandaScan or whatever it's called.

Also, if you're still using IE (which ActiveX is required so Firefox is a no go) you should probably consider getting Firefox. That'll solve most of your issues right there. You might also consider getting a decent anti-virus such as Avast! or AVG...though AVG failed for me a few weeks ago, it's supposedly a good alternative.

Yeah I use Firefox 2, I understood Mozilla came out with the 3rd version

Im kinda against IE, cause Dexplore used up 93KB worth of memory in the Task manager. Christ.

Dexplore? You mean Iexplore? If not, look into what that is, because it's not IE.

Also, you shouldn't dislike IE because of its memory usage (which is pretty much immeasurable anyway because of the OS integration). You should dislike it because of the security holes, rendering bugs, ignorance of standards, lack of speed, and overall stupidity.

Ranko, that site removed about 80% of the problems on my computer, I cant thank you enough that it at least solved the majority of the problems my computer's been having.

Trend Micro's pretty solid from my experience. I wasn't too pleased with the overhead on my system, which is why I use other software...but the online site is very good for those who don't have anti-virus or their AV's been hit hard and they can't get the problem fixed themselves but can still get on the net no problem. I believe it's program was named the best anti-virus for this past year, if I'm not mistaken.

That said, by end-2008, it'll be ousted from that position due to people picking on it with new viruses sent to attack in stealth for said scanner. That's usually how most anti-virus scanners go. The popular ones are usually the ones that can't do the job as much as others go.

...what?

How do you "accidentally" install Vista? Has Microsoft really sunk so low that Vista installs itself with no user intervention?

"AAUGH! KEEP THAT DVD AWAY FROM MY COMPUTER! NOOOOooooo......." *Vista!*

Before I knew enough about computers to rid my first one of the pre-installed junk, it crashed and I reinstalled it with the factory restore disc. I chose not to install the included McAfee AV because it sucked (even by then I'd found a better AV), but I left the disc in the drive and left it on for some reason I don't remember. The next day I went to use it and McAfee had installed itself. >:

I hate Dell.

I go to replace the power supply and find out the connector is a 20-pin and not a 24-pin. So I guess I'll have to return the power supply and get a new one (sigh). Then I decide to see if any of the power supplies in my other computers will work, find one that should work fine, but it won't fit in the case because the opening in the back of the case is raised in one spot, naturally the spot where the power cable connector is, so it's blocking that and the damn thing won't fit ARGHHHHHHHHH. </rant>

Wrong-o.

A 20-pin connector will work in a 24-pin connector slot. However, you should have a 2x2 4-pin connection that also goes into your board that should be connected to the power supply itself. If you don't have this 4-pin terminal on your board, odds are it's going to be part of your 24-pin connector slot and you'll likely have to plug -both- in the 24-pin slot. You would then have a 20-pin and 4-pin in a 24-pin slot. Kinda crowded, but it should work in theory, since all those four pins do is the exact same thing as a separate terminal would by itself, power it on.

That's not normally what I have to do on the comps I build up at work. Usually I'll put a 20 pin connector in a 24 pin slot (with it facing far left looking at the flapped end) and then put a 2x2 4 pin in the slot I described. The 20 pin will run everything except the process to actually get the thing started. You'll have a working fan and everything but all you'll get is a black screen without that extra 4.

Erm sorry that post was rather confusing, I meant the motherboard only supported 20-pin and the cord was a 24-pin.

Huh...all the 24-pin supplies I've bought have had detachable 4-pin sections for compatibility with older boards, as well as the separate 4-pin CPU connector. Hooray for potential confusion!

(the two are keyed differently, but that doesn't stop some people...)

I know this thread hasn't been posted in for a month but it's a sticky nobody cares
1. A while ago a harddrive died due to viruses or something.
2. One day an antivirus went apeshit and messed with my CPU power. Closing it caused the computer to slowly lock up. I had to reformat
3. Sometimes my internet just conks out for a few hours.
4. If I play netplay or torrents or such things after around an hour my internet stops until I reboot. This is intensely annoying and I want to know how to fix it.
5. My mouse is a jerk and while the lights may be on it doesn't mean it's actually working.
