Seattle? Heh. Not far from there, but going before "pay day" would be a killer.

I could probably take the bus there, but I can't really justify the expense.

Also: Torrents are fucking annoying. Let's see, last week I had I think three going. One eventually completed, one was dead, and one did the whole stuck-at-99% thing with the one last piece that always fails hash checking. Had to change a lot of how the routers were set up for it to finally finish. (No no no, using DMZ mode on one and letting the second one handle all the firewalling would be too easy! Obviously I need two firewalls! )

Today I had another few going and sure enough, one gets stuck at the last two pieces. >: These changes were supposed to prevent that, period, but no. So I change the port numbers again, reboot the computer and both routers, reconnect to change IP, bypass one of the routers entirely, nothing fucking works. Of course every time I change anything, another reboot. Windows also is incapable of re-enabling a network connection after disabling it - just hangs forever. Altogether about 12 reboots before I just shut down the LAN connection entirely and connected via wifi. This of course gave me a different local IP, breaking my web server, but it was the only option left. And then I had to leave right away so I couldn't see and stay if that was working.

I come back a few hours later and the machine is dead. No video, no sound, no response from the keyboard LEDs. Just occasional disk activity. WTF. Hard-reboot and of course Windows has no explanation, boots up like nothing ever happened, no messages in the event log, etc. And BitTornado has completely lost track of the torrent. Doesn't even remember where it was saved.

But wouldn't you know it, the torrent finally completed before it crashed.

As a bonus, the Start menu is fucking up now. Like what the fuck, it hasn't even been a month since I reinstalled. Man I really need to get some other machine set up as a web server so this one can actually be down for a while while I migrate it to Linux. >: But of course none of the spare machines I have capable of handling that actually work.

What really bugs me is why this shit happens in the first place. People say it's because routers will mangle the packets thinking it's fixing some broken old game. I don't know where to begin listing the problems with that. It only ever affects torrents, it can't be disabled, and despite it being such a common problem the clients aren't capable of just talking to eachother and saying "hey, run that last piece through a simple XOR cipher so the router won't mangle it". Right.

I'm sure I could set up my server for that, even if it's just temporary.

And, best of all, I don't have to try to make Windows communicate with Linux. The last time I tried that, things started to look like this.

You know, I have never experienced a single problem in all the time I've been using XP on my laptop (over one and a half years).

Windows 2000 ran perfectly, as well (over two years).

I really have to wonder what HyperHacker keeps breaking to the point his XP installation craps out like that.

When someone goes by the name "HyperHacker," it should give a bit of a hint as to why their Windows is broken.

I'm not sure when this XP install was made. Probably last year, between June and September. It has a few annoyances. Could use cleaning up somewhat. Though overall stable, only like one random BSOD in the past few months. Quite lucky there.

With all the testimonials I hear, I'd have to agree. You're either just lucky or very, very careful.

Windows 2000 and (to a somewhat lesser extent) XP have always worked really well for me. The biggest problems I have with XP are DirectX and/or GUI-related; emulator menus often disappear behind the game screen, SNES9X Debugger flickers and stutters horribly, and some things just disappear. I think the addition of themes broke something, but it doesn't seem like anyone else is having the same problems.

I have a few game-related issues. Most ZSNES versions crash to desktop if I enable hq filters, and Battlefield 2 crashes to desktop when the audio settings menu is opened. Neither gives an error message of any sort.

Hm. Matt Engarde came to mind, actually.

...Except that there'd need to be a "wait I'll call my manager to make sure they are," moment.
