From what I've read, it's more that this just gives them reasonable cause to search- if they actually find anything, then it's jail time...

This is totally something that the US government would do without fully thinking through the potential hazards in doing this. As said, if a virus gets out (which I'm damned sure there will be one now) we're all fucked. Way to go US.

Don't forget that you can't be prosecuted if you don't do something illegal.

1) Let's say that the FBI sets up a page that says "You have just been observed attempting to commit a crime. The FBI will arrive at your premises shortly."
2) Let's say you click a link leading to that page.
3) Have you committed a crime in doing so? It's not illegal to look at a page that says the FBI is coming. It may give them reason to obtain a search warrant, but it's not enough to prosecute someone.

This is the internet. People like to take things out of context, overexaggerate them and ultimately try to get everyone to believe in the mangled account of what's actually going on.

If these fake links become a popular way to get people in trouble, then they will no longer help the FBI crack down on offenders and they'll have to stop doing it.

The article is no authority. I would only rate its credibility in the "moderate" area, at that. In order to be prosecuted for something--and subsequently found guilty--you A) have to actually do something illegal and B) get caught doing it. Clicking a fake link does neither.
