Another reason might also be as a protest against his family deciding he needed to be cared for.

I am not an expert in psychology (or even a novice, for that matter) but... building a large, complex device to do this must show at least some capability to handle things. It's always possible that was also part of the goal, as a final defiant act to show that he was not needing this.

Or you could just say he wanted to go out with an impressive bang, which also works, I guess.

I love the headline. I wonder if he didn't do it this way thinking "it's not technically suicide if a robot kills me instead of killing myself" or something. Or maybe he wanted to build a robot. "I feel like killing myself, but I also kinda feel like making a robot... OF COURSE!"
Knowing my luck, were I to try this, it'd shoot me in the foot repeatedly until I went over and pulled the plug or something.

Maybe he thought no one would except the mechanism holding a gun as his "suicide machine", thinking it would cause some unsolvable mystery. Or it could just be a plethora of other reasons.

Anyway, he may have done this thinking that it wasn't suicide at all, but rather forcing someone else to kill him. Some people are opposed to suicide...he may be one of them.
