NIS America finally updated their website. Just press releases for the new stuff but they did confirm that the DS version is a PSP port, meaning Etna Mode and multiplayer are in as well as the grid map on the top screen and optional stylus control.

I'm in ur thread, geekin' up the place.

The two biggest problems. 8-64MB cartridges that cost far more than 600-700MB CDs. It was also a pain to develop for, but seeing how PSX used an R3000 too, that might have been moot.

My question is...how big do these DS carts go again? I thought Disgaea: AoD, for instance, was something around the 500MB mark for size. That going to mean that they're gonna dull it down for the DS?
The protocol allows up to 4GB, but last I heard Nintendo only makes up to 128MB.

"The main feature of Disgaea DS is the multi-player mode. Fans that are tired of the original can still get a kick out of this game by destroying their buddy's Laharl and Etna...

The intuitive stylus controls and dual screen is a huge plus, but there are newly added features and characters from our past titles, so there is still a lot of oomph left in this game." - Kotaku

EDIT: "Niida goes on to mention that this version of the game will include everything from the PSP version plus extra content." -Kotaku also.

This means that for sure voices will be in!

Guess Fails beat me to it.

Disgaea DS details revealed.

My question is how is there MORE content than the PSP version when we've already mentioned size constraints?

Multi-cart? Though how that would work just seems rather unwieldy...

The PSP has a larger screen and better resolution than the DS, so the graphics may end up being dulled down a bit, but that doesn't seem like nearly enough

I'm actually kind of disappointed that it's the same game again.

...

Oh well, I guess... unless it was wi-fi support (not just ad-hoc multiplayer), why bother?

It may be online this time. I hope so. =\

Also I'll sacrifice graphics on the DS to keep everything else and add more. I could use some more Disgaea and the fact I have a hard time finding the first one on the PS2 means I'll be picking this up in a sinch.

Obviously if you played Afternoon of Darkness then, well, not much will be new I guess...

Apparently...there's more...

See extras...

Only thing I can see knocking it down a peg is lower resolution and [possibly] no Jap language. They swear there's more than AoD got.

Crispy Gamer also asked Niida if we'd ever see a Disgaea game on the 360 or Wii, to which he replied coyly, "Who knows, you might see something interesting coming out later in the year."

Disgaea 3 for Wii announced by the end of the year. Book it. (Yeah, I'm convinced... and if there's a choice, it's not gonna be 360 for Japan market purposes.)

The big news won't be the port but how they manage to cram everything into the DS. That's actually a hell of a feat.

The only thing that would push me over the edge for a DS at this point is if I hear the term 'WiFi capable' mentioned with it.

Disgaea 1 has a better story than Disgaea 2, but worse gameplay. So I preferred the second.

Still... Another port? This is going too far. They'll probably cut graphic quality, remove some voice acting, etc. Even the newer 256MB carts for DS (like ASH used) are still less than a quarter of one PSP disc.

Not really, considering the Nintendo fanboys pleaded for it.

The Japanese Nintendo fanboys more so, I assume (although I'm sure some American fanboys were begging too).

Hey, if they say everything's in there, then either they're going to do a great compression job or the sound quality's going to be crap.

If Pleinair is made playable, who's going to sit in front of the Dark Assembly? Or will there be 2 of them

Only 1-2 months left now (June 26 in Japan, July here) until bunnies can start raining

Well, what about that one Magic Knight that did nothing before?

I just had a thought. Was the music in Disgaea PSP streamed or sequenced (if the PSP can even work that way)? If it was streamed, NIS might end up just sequencing the music for the DS version... But hey, you never know.

And if people are worried about the game's graphics being badly dumbed down, remember Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Time/Darkness. At base there are 493 Pokemon with sprites. Add on variants for gender dimorphism, story characters like Primal Dialga, the few shiny Pokemon in the game, all the Unown... It's well into the 500s at least. Not to mention all the battle effects (moves, orbs/seeds, etc.), and the graphics for 30+ dungeons, as well as unremoved test/dummy dungeons, and maps between dungeons.

I think Disgaea will do just fine. I can't wait! [I had the PSP version from GameFly, but I had to send it back due to... circumstances. ]

The graphics hardly took a beating. The official site has screenshots up of it.

The map is excellent for the top screen, showing not only enemy placement, but facing as well.

This will be great.

The original version (PlayStation 2) had streamed music in ADPCM format (44kHz 16bit stereo with 3.5x compression), it was also 83% of the game data (606MB, the rest is 121MB)

Sequencing it will cut down on the size a lot, but how much of a difference it'll cause will mostly depend on how well it's done ...

It sure isn't hard to tell that a lot of graphics took a pretty bad hit with this Everything's very jagged and the font is completely different from before...
