So you could say then that I have an addiction to the internet because every morning before work, I need to go online to wake myself up, while watching either Family Guy, Robot Chicken or the Simpsons (sometimes a mix of all three). But what else am I going to do while getting ready for work at 7am, blast the music to wake everyone else up? Sounds like a great idea, but no. But I do remember a time about two or so years ago when I would always be online whenever I can. Taking breaks and doing other things (like more work or playing a console game) help fix that. Plus the majority of the people that I used to chat with online are either MIA or extremely busy and are not online when I do have the time/want for it. At any rate, I don't think its an illness but more of being lazy on certain days and just something to pass the time when I don't want to be at work an hour early. And its better than going out and spending money that needs to be save/do not have or simply going postal.

So basically, this would be a man-made mental illness since they didn't have the internet and cell phones back in the day like when the Trojan War was going on.

Apparently, we're all out to be uniquely brain-fucked.

Internet may just be another niche for most people, they're just good at it...some people are just better suited to deal with things remotely than face to face, I mean that's why people are shy, and so forth. Others just need some sort of hobby. I would really wonder if they could say this same exact statement against people who play sports and are really good at it for a living and answer the same questions they've just tried to pose: 'If they're not allowed to participate in it, do they feel depressed?', etc. I'm pretty sure any particular 'addictions' would be of the same token...but I think a lot of it stems from interactions from other people more than the actual activity myself.

That's really the only thing I can say if you want to go ahead and classify me under this 'addiction' since I would be fscking bored as hell otherwise. I may use it quite often but I at least have a life otherwise that doesn't rely on it.

Makes me wonder if it's classified as an addiction because it's something they don't enjoy/don't understand. Guess anything could be. More and more, we're relying on it in our lives, so of course there's going to be critics of it. :\

If internet addiction is a mental illness, then I *DEMAND* that sports obsessions be labeled as such too. While we're at it, you could also label religion as a mental illness, because some people base their lives around that too.

The whole argument is stupid... just because you like something or have a hobby doesn't mean it's a mental illness. People these days are really too trigger-happy with labeling something they don't understand as wrong, or an illness.

Edit: So yeah, I guess I basically say the same thing as Hiryuu.

The internet is not something to be addicted to: it's just a hobby. Furthermore, there's more to the internet than chat rooms, gaming, and text-messaging, and those mentioned things are the more involved things to do on the internet. People who are dumb enough to let the internet interfere with their lives can be addicted to basically any hobby, and as such it's stupid to single out the internet as the sole cause.

As mentioned before, if being "addicted" to a hobby is a mental illness, then let's go ahead and throw sports, religion, and music in there too.

What a great way to make pharmaceutical companies richer! How do you treat a mental illness? Medication, of course. If internet addiction is classified as a mental illness, it opens up a whole new group of people to sell drugs to.

Well, one thing that really gets me in terms of this is that if you take into account that not everyone thinks like anyone else (even in the cases of identical twins) you learn that you can easily label someone something different and be right. It's really supposed to be only in the extreme cases that they label something a mental illness...this is not of; it is something very common that people partake in almost daily and more and more this is becoming common for people, even the ones that may have hated computers to begin with.

I think they TRYING to go over the people that will be bad off if they have their net killed without contact with the people they know versus being social. In that standpoint, I can understand someone's frustration and want back onto the net if they're not very social past that, but I would NOT label it a mental illness. That's just really plain and simple STUPID to do so and that's really something that would be a 'not understanding' part on the psych's part. We need to communicate in some form or another and maybe this is just easier for some people (as I stated earlier).

But, of course, there are as many systems of right and wrong as there are people; I doubt people will come to a definitive conclusion of what really IS right on this...just lame for those that are affected.

I for one hate to be around other people and large crowds. Sure, I enjoy going to baseball and hockey games (haven't been lucky enough to attend a football game yet) that tend to have a lot of people, but, like the other night, the hockey game was over and it was packed. I was fine up until everyone started to take the escalators, I slowly started to freak out inside and my hubby told me that it'll be okay, but in my mind I just kept thinking, "all these people on an escalator cannot be safe" and had thoughts about a stampede. I am not social and I really cannot blame that on the net b/c it wasn't until I was 19 that I discovered it. Its more b/c of my sheltered life and growing up in a poor trailer park (of all places!). I'd rather communicate with people via text, e-mail, MySpace and trillian than using the phone. Also, I always get the impression that whatever I say will come out as silly and a WTF-factor. Hell, I'm even shy online at times. But I'm going all over the place with this post...so..ummm...yea.

Pft. Can't touch this. There are times when I actually avoid being on the internet. And I go without it... for weeks... when my trip requires it.

Then of course, one would have to ignore my borderline narcissism, excessive speech, agressive behavior, potentially ADD related symptoms, and heck, if you want to microanalyze what I do, you could claim I'm nuts.

Yet, somehow, when I ask most people, they say I'm more sane than they are. How... bizarre.
