Anyone been keeping up with it? The only reason I re-re-re-re-looked it up was because someone asked about it just recently.

Apparently, there's been an M1 release based off Windows Vista Ultimate.

Take a look here.

I would hope to heck that it's BETTER than Vista and not a Vista that's going to get WORSE.

I guess I'll start looking for the public betas sometime in 2012, then.

I know I'm being cynical, and maybe Microsoft will surprise me by releasing it when they predict they will.

A ten-minute install process would certainly be neat...

On a different note, MinWin strikes me as rather funny. It doesn't have a GUI, so it's Windows... without any windows.

Pft, I'll fight them tooth and nail with my ability to hack my system into continually working until they make a worthy OS. Vista's already been fought off (mostly), so they better think twice before trying to foist another piece of crud on me.

Like they said, Vista is just a temporary piece of crud they threw to the crud dogs to hold them over. The MinWin business is a step in the right direction, as it enables the user to determine what software ultimately ends up on the system. They're taking a page out of the book of Linux, if you ask me.

XP wasn't any better in that regard. It took the legendarily stable 2000 core, and buried it with multimedia bloat to finally "convince" 98 users they should move on.

When I think "Legendarily Stable", I'm thinking MS-DOS.

Actually uh, Windows 2000 is the one that added all the 98 crap to entice users to move.

Windows peaked at NT 4 and will never reach that point again.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
I see no reason they made Vista let alone started development on the 7. It would've made a lot more sense to make a some kind of an XP 2.

Because XP didn't have product activation and UAC built in to the kernel.

Windows 2000 wasn't marketed to home users, though- it was supposedly the "business" version, with the amazing debacle that was Windows Me being the "home" version and the upgrade to Windows 98SE... and Windows 2000 didn't have nearly the bloat that XP does...

Not quite. Very few of my programs worked on it back when it was installed on my computer.

But it wasn't built in. It was added on later and is easily removable again.

Same as Vista practically.

In fact, Vista's activation was cracked before its official release. You can thank Microsoft for leaving it so similar to XP, and crackers have been used to XP for years now.

I highly doubt that Microsoft will ever make an OS whose activation can't be cracked. That's just the way people are, I guess.

Same here. Some MMOs haven't been cracked to play for free using other servers, but that's off-topic.

It's literally impossible. The only thing Microsoft is really doing, is punishing legitimate users.
