If I do anything even slightly CPU intensive, my fan will start howling extremely noisily and unsurprisingly, stopping the fan makes my computer crash. Could someone give me some tips about this?

Cleaned it yet? Dust is the first thing to catch it.

If that's not the case, how old is it? Likely a bearing's about to go south in it or a fan blade's cracked and you need to buy a new one. The only real thing you need to figure out there is the socket type for your processor and then buy a new one. Average fans last a good three to five years under heavy use and they cost about 20.

I took the time to buy a fanless for mine. It's just a gigantic heatsink that cost 60 bucks.
