I'm baaaaaaaaack!

I was expecting the game to last me at least two days before beating the adventure mode and unlocking all the characters and stages, but hey... At least I didn't have to leave the system on overnight to unlock a character like Mewtwo in Melee.

My thoughts:

- Graphics -
On-par with other high-end visuals on the system like Excite Truck and Metroid Prime 3. Characters look very good, backgrounds are beautiful and the menu is reminiscent of Kirby Air Ride.

- Music -
There are many. They start you out with over 100 and ask you to collect at least 50 more. They come from a wide range of artists, which yeilds a wide range of styles. I've never heard techno, orchestra and heavy metal all at the same time before.

Remember how Sakurai said the game's theme music is like the core of the game's music? He meant it. My only complaint about the music in this game is that if there's anything that has to do with Smash Bros. specifically, including much of the adventure mode, it's a variation of that one tune. I sit there thinking, "Hey, something new! Wait, no... no..."

- Gameplay -
It's like the N64 and GameCube titles combined as far as gameplay is concerned. People keep commenting on the fact that it initially feels like you float around in the air, but after a while you see that it all fits into place. Combos work again! Hitting people hurts them! The CPU won't recover from Meteor Smashes with wimpy jumps!

It really is a good mesh of the previous two games. Smash Bros. was known for crazy combos and Melee was known for lightning-quick slap fighting. Now we have both. There are fists flying every which way wherever people aren't.

- King Dedede -
I've heard a lot about how people don't like Dedede. I was curious until I tried him myself. Many of his attacks have long delays on them; approaching one second. People want to see his hammer swing immediately when they do a Smash Attack, but it simply doesn't work that way. On the other hand, no joke, you can send someone flying at high speed to their doom in just 3 hits.

The power of this guy is tremendous, but the delay for his attacks is unwieldy. To use him well, you need to be pretty smart and predict ahead of time where your opponents are going to be. Since the majority of players want to fight and not think, however, you hear a bunch about how people don't like him.

Which is why I like him and would love to main him. He's more powerful than Bowser, he's one of the heaviest characters in the game, and he handles fairly well once you're used to him. I've already gotten then hang of his delayed attacks. I've beaten Sonicandtails playing as Sheik - which I might say was quite hard - but nonetheless was a win with Dedede. He's also a pretty kick ass character in general.

I think I'll use Sonic as my second pick. I enjoy his speed and his overall retro attitude. It just feels to me like Sakurai saved the Sonic franchise, even with a horrible voice actor to drag down Sonic's character.

Somewhat old wintery layout!
----------------------------------------------------

Dedede is a mixed bag for me.

On one hand, he is probably by far the most powerful character in game (side smash A anyone? Sends people launching). He's also pretty easy to control... to a point. The rest of his attacks have decent speed and power behind them.

My only qualm is his up b... which should be used sparingly (mainly because after you jump, there is no turning back...). I'll have to play him again to give my final synopsis

Other notables:

Kirby is now back in his prime! Side hammer is wicked powerful, and dash a is now comboable with side (smash) a!

Lucas is pretty darn good. His up smash is wicked slow, but everything else works really well (beat Classic Intense with 1 continue with him).

But the fact of the matter is, Kirby will always be my huggable, lovable character ^_____^

Music time! If traffic gets rough, I'll take down this file. Downloads from this game are in high demand right now.

If you don't have the game yet, this is the kind of music you have to look forward to. WARNING: It's not exactly a spoiler, but it IS something you won't be able to enjoy later if you hear it now.

The title of the music is in this spoiler tag.

Thoughts:

In general: Fuck the "Names" system. It's impossible (at least, I haven't found an option for it yet) to bind a name to a controller port, so you always have to select your name before a game, even if you just exited to the menu and back. When your controls don't mathc, this is a major annoyance.

Spectator mode: Oh, so this is where everybody went when tournaments stopped being Final Destination only. That or Battlefield. I Think I've seen different stages a total of about 5% of the time. Nice variety, guys.

Music: ENOUGH REMIXES OF THE FUCKING BRAWL THEME ALREADY FOR FUCK'S SAKE

Graphics: Shiny! Kind of neat, I guess.

Overall: I mash the buttons and occasionally I get lucky and win. It's strangely fun despite how much I suck.
Also, I love the coin launcher game to bits.

Hmmm..I'm actually getting bored of the game already...a bit repetitive me thinks. But I'll hold onto it a bit longer and maybe it'll grow on me. I mean, I loved it when I first played it..hell, even on the 2nd day...but now....

You just need the drive to beat it completely. Either that or you could try the tourney out.

There isn't much different from this game and the previous ones besides new characters and nicer arenas to battle in. But yeah, I don't think I will tire of playing until at least I can manhandle lvl. 9 computers in a 5-man stock free-for-all.

Never played the others, this is my first Super Smash.

But I do have to say, it has gotten me in the mood to take out the Dreamcast for some Marvel vs Capcom 2 for some reason...

Once you get absolutely everything done, the game becomes a competitive one. If you don't like playing in competitions and tournaments, then I really can't recommend the game to people. You see, beating Subspace Emissary, beating all of the events, getting all of the trophies, stickers, the game becomes "Become the Best". You want the fastest times on the timed games, you want the farthest distance in Homerun Contest, you want to beat anyone who crosses your path, most of all; you want to win money in tourneys. If this doesn't sound appealing, then there really isn't much left. The game does take at least 40+ hours to get everything, possibly more, I'm just making a rough estimate. So it's about the length of a good single-player game with multiplayer capabilities. Now if you want to talk about repetition, let's talk about Marvel vs. Capcom...

I beg to differ. The slapstick universe that is Smash Bros. makes a very inviting situation for friends to join in and have some fun. I cannot stress this enough: Smash Bros. is designed so you have fun whether you win or lose. That said, I highly recommend that people play the game to have fun; let winning be secondary.

Smash Bros. has always grown old playing solo. The CPU become predictable after a while, so some good old-fashioned human interaction is needed to make things fun again.

This man speaks truth. I never played a single tournament, but I enjoyed Melee for years because I could kick back and play it with some friends on a Friday night and waste the hours away.

I haven't gotten a chance to Brawl with anyone else yet (see my complaints on previous pages), but I would imagine the same is true here.

Yeah, I used to play this a lot when I lived with my uncle and his kids. There are some interesting stuff that would happen that could never happen if I was just playing against computers.

Yeah, i wanted to play a random match against a few random human opponents and Nintendo WFC couldn't find me anyone. I wonder if I did anything wrong. *shrugs* Some human opponents are nice because they can make mistakes at times, whereas it seems the computer never does make mistakes.

The computers are usually best beaten by misusing moves in ways they aren't programmed to beat.

On the other hand, humans can generally be fought with those moves in their correct configuration. Hence, Brawl and its predecessors are always best with people, as the computer on higher levels can only be beaten in an unfun way.

Already racked up an hour of online play time. Too bad the online wasn't working today.

Also, well worth waiting until midnight last Saturday.

Finally got around to trying the multiplayer.

So far, it's quite good. Although latency tends to be a mixed bag. I had a fair bit of lag playing against Tanks, despite him having a far, far faster connection than I yet some of the 4p matches I've been playing with a few people I know on another IRC network generally had little lag.

The singleplayer is quite fun, but I can see it becoming repetitive after a while. The adventure mode (SSE) is a blast, even.

A few friends I had from work (when they still worked where I do, anyway) would get together from time to time and play smash on the weekends. Usually it was all-night, even.

Definitely more fun than the lotto from Melee. :3

Granted, MvC2 does get repetitive after awhile, but unlocking characters is so much easier.

I've only played a few solo matches and when I am playing 2v2, I get the feeling that I should be playing something else...
