| I'm baaaaaaaaack!
I was expecting the game to last me at least two days before beating the adventure mode and unlocking all the characters and stages, but hey... At least I didn't have to leave the system on overnight to unlock a character like Mewtwo in Melee. My thoughts: - Graphics - On-par with other high-end visuals on the system like Excite Truck and Metroid Prime 3. Characters look very good, backgrounds are beautiful and the menu is reminiscent of Kirby Air Ride. - Music - There are many. They start you out with over 100 and ask you to collect at least 50 more. They come from a wide range of artists, which yeilds a wide range of styles. I've never heard techno, orchestra and heavy metal all at the same time before. Remember how Sakurai said the game's theme music is like the core of the game's music? He meant it. My only complaint about the music in this game is that if there's anything that has to do with Smash Bros. specifically, including much of the adventure mode, it's a variation of that one tune. I sit there thinking, "Hey, something new! Wait, no... no..." - Gameplay - It's like the N64 and GameCube titles combined as far as gameplay is concerned. People keep commenting on the fact that it initially feels like you float around in the air, but after a while you see that it all fits into place. Combos work again! Hitting people hurts them! The CPU won't recover from Meteor Smashes with wimpy jumps! It really is a good mesh of the previous two games. Smash Bros. was known for crazy combos and Melee was known for lightning-quick slap fighting. Now we have both. There are fists flying every which way wherever people aren't. - King Dedede - I've heard a lot about how people don't like Dedede. I was curious until I tried him myself. Many of his attacks have long delays on them; approaching one second. People want to see his hammer swing immediately when they do a Smash Attack, but it simply doesn't work that way. On the other hand, no joke, you can send someone flying at high speed to their doom in just 3 hits. The power of this guy is tremendous, but the delay for his attacks is unwieldy. To use him well, you need to be pretty smart and predict ahead of time where your opponents are going to be. Since the majority of players want to fight and not think, however, you hear a bunch about how people don't like him. |
