We're sending ads for Doritos 42 lightyears away. Wacky! (via slashdot)

Most of the comments posted for that story are hilarious, too.

I bet you when we get invaded by aliens, it was because of this...but no one will realize it.

I actually remember in a certain series' side-story, this kind of thing is exactly what caused a massive attack by an alien race that basically decimated most of their existance.

(10000coin bonus if you can PM me the name of it.)

Anyway, the fact they have to resort to this to get funding is pretty sad.

Hm, they should've used the ansible. We should probably keep Mazer Rackham ready, should things go a bit...awry.

Yes, it is something really important to 'broadcast' advertisements through the galaxy [...]
If there was technology to interact with people's dreams, then there would be advertisements for sure, like "This wet and hot dream was sponsored by Coca-Cola."

Barrista En Flambe alerts us to a stunt that may reflect the desperate funding crisis in British astronomy: astronomers have agreed to beam a 30-second Doritos ad to a solar system 42 light years from Earth. The transmission is being directed at the solar system of 47 Ursae Majoris, a star similar to the Sun which has planets and may have a habitable zone.

And I'd enjoy the dreams but never buy another Coca-Cola product. Or much more likely, they'd be annoying as fuck and I'd sue for harassment or something.

Really, stupid. Although I doubt anything will come of it. I mean, what if the situation were reversed and suddenly we get an advertisement from another planet. We wouldn't know what the fuck, and we wouldn't be able to do anything about it either, since we, and probably the other planet, don't have the tech to go to the source. I'm more concerned what's wrong with the Doritos people honestly. Do they really think that this will sell their product? If we do make contact, I'd think they'd deliberately boycott Doritos for interrupting their favorite alien soap opera or something.

"We have recieved a transmission from a previously unknown quadrant of the galaxy, all-mighty master. Though it's language is strange and not ours, parts that we have decoded appear to mock our great leader, Doh-ry-toss."

"Mocking the leader is prohibited! From wherefore did this heresy arise?"

"As said, the region is uncharted wild-lands. Some barbarian tribe likely."

"Blast their planet with the cosmic-ray-generator. None mock the name of Doh-ry-toss and live."

I was wondering why they chose such a distance but didn't notice the number really until just now.

Yes.

It will sell product. I don't see why you people get so hung up on the "extraterrestrials can't buy this stuff". Crazy marketing stunts get more attention, more attention means more customers, more customers means more profits.

Kinda sad the astronomers needed the money, but for a simple request like that, I'd say it was worth it.

So instead of using technology like this for something useful they're planning on sending an ad to some other solar system that may inhabit life and after seeing the ad any life that does see it is going to have no way of ever obtaining any of what was in the ad.

Yep sounds stupid alright
