I use RAR! Compresses well (better than 7zip, except for packs of similar ROMs, where 7zip wins) and WinRAR works with every type of archive I've come across.
When I'm posting things (hacks etc) I use ZIP as it's more widely known (even Windows supports it natively, for those without a proper archive program).

It's shareware with a 40 day trial, as it reminds you whenever you run it, but no one cares anyway

But I do like how it's under 2MB (while supporting .zip, .cab, .7z, .tar.gz and so on) and doesn't require an install, just run it once and it sets up everything

Windows, i use ZIP because sending to ZIP file is easier than selecting options for raring

- Select file or files in Explorer
- menu key, A (add to archive)
- Alt-C, End, Alt-S, Enter (max compression, solid archive)
That's always how I do it, sure you have to get used to it first but it works well

I use ZIP for most files. Maybe RAR once in a while if need be. Rarely ever any others.

You can probably set those to be the default options (Tools > Settings > Compression > Create Default), which will cut out most of it.

It cuts off the Alt-C End Alt-S part but not the rest, unless you use "Add to <archive name>" instead, then it's instant ... good to know too, I rarely run WinRAR by itself so I never found this in the options

I have collections of ZIP, RAR and 7z files. I normally use ZIP if I'm sending stuff only because I'm used to it... I really don't take the time to compress something with each program and see what's best.

Usually whatever's best for the task.

Zip is a nice general purpose format compatible with every operating system under the sun. Only Hello World can beat it in number of ports. 7z is nice for personal stuff, or where I know the target is aware of 7-Zip (xk: No test feature? wtf? I use it all the time). tar.gz for backups

Oh, also I keep all my music in FLAC, it's generally the best supported lossless format around. If I had a portable player (I'm considering getting an iPod 5g and putting Rockbox on it...), I might see the benefits of using WavPack with its hybrid format (no need to re-encode just to get small lossy versions)

Drag's Post #648
I usually use zip, due to the ease of using it, and the relatively wide availability of com/decompressors. I usually only use this for single files, or small amounts of files.

I only use rar when it's absolutely necessary to shrink the file as much as possible, but I still occasionally use it.
