My current MP3 player is screwed up. It doesn't hold a charge, and plugging it in is hit or miss. I'd like suggestions for a new one.

Priorities:
1) Needs to have a screen that'll display enough info to let me pick what song I wanna hear.
2) Needs to not be wildly priced. (Under $150 would be best.)
3) Needs to support OGG.
4) My brother has an iPod on my computer, and I dunno if that'll screw things up if I have one on this computer, too. Plus it's way too much work to do simple stuff (ie: charge it) compared with my current MP3 player.

So what non-OMG GOOGEL suggestions do you guys have?

Get an older iPood or something and drop the firmware in place of RockBox (which supports OGG among vastly more things). That way you can chuck almost anything on there and not have to worry about the CrapTunes software or even registering the thing. Could find it on eBay for cheap. Reason I say not new is because most of the RockBox software supports older versions of it. New nanos aren't in support yet.

Aside from that, I know Rockbox supports on more than just iPoods...I think Creative and Sandisk are two such things that are under its gun.

The only OGG player that natively supports in existence, I think, was that Wizpy thing I saw a while back that had Linux on it that cost a load and booted Linux.

Another thing you failed to mention was size. Regardless of cost, how much space DO you want?

At the very most I'd need room for about 2000 songs, so about 8 GB.

I just recently bought this and I freakin love it! It plays a ton of sound formats, the sound quality is outstanding, and I didn't even have to upgrade the firmware to get flac and ogg support. You don't have to fool with any software unless you want to install their version of virtualdub if you want to put movies on it. It's all drag and drop. It's the first MP3 player I've ever owned though so I can't really compare it anything else out there. If you want 8gig, the 8gig model they have is $135 after the rebate.

You don't pay attention very well, do you?

If you're going the Rockbox route, you may as well check their supported players...

That's not bad for something new...

...the only problem is I have a RockBox'd 30GB Black iPood and spent 45 dollars on it. :\

Don't forget, Rockbox also has a "battery drain" feature, which cuts the battery life really badly.

That one seems to last quite a while, and it might just be what he needs.

Battery temperance...actually...you can set that feature though.

Let's see, DS sells for about $120, flash carts as little as $20, and if you look around you can get a 2GB MicroSD for another $20. And who doesn't already have a DS?

Realistically, an 8GB player for under $150 seems farfetched to me. Unless they're just way overpriced around here.

I already do have a DS, and am familiar with Rockbox (my current MP3 player has it). I was trying to ask for suggestions on what kind of MP3 player you would suggest, btw, doesn't necessarily have to be under $150 or anything.

I just found out the DS is only capable of 10-bit, 32KHz output (a limitation of the DAC, apparently). No wonder my music always sounded a bit flat.

Dagnabbit, now I want a PSP even more!

I'd honestly go with HH here. Just be sure you're purchasing a quality cart first or you might end up with something really crappy...
