Rar's. Mostly. But sometimes zip, because some idiots refuse to install Winrar etc.

Referring to my school, where they "forgot" to install 7zip, whereas older computers have it

The only time I use zip is when downloading files that are compressed with it, which is hardly ever.

RAR, mostly since WinRAR just has that right-click context menu

RAR/ZIP most of the time. 7z when I really really want it small with ultra compression.

When I compress things, I always use RAR. On a lot of places I go to, people don't seem to know how to uncompress less common formats (hell, sometimes you get someone who doesn't know what rar is), so I avoid using anything more obscure.

Depends what it's used for. I like source code in .tar.gz or .tar.bz2 so if it has a bunch of scripts, they stay executable. I usually compress stuff with .zip because it's what everyone has. If I want heavy compression, i use 7zip because rar is proprietary. I only have it installed to extract rars I find. I use file-roller when im not using the command line tools.

Somewhat old wintery layout!
----------------------------------------------------

RAR, if only for the fact that it's universally "accepted", and decent to boot.

7z if I so feel like it though

RAR, usually.

ZIP for already tiny files that I just want to bundle into an archive, though...

RAR and by far... Even though I sometimes use ZIP or TAR.GZ, I like RAR the best, it's faster than other compressions.

7z, because I'm not a big fan of rar.

Of course, it's no good at compressing already-compressed files. The only already-compressed files I can think of would be PNG, and pngout gets them smallest most of the time. I checked. (Goodbye pngcrush, optipng and advpng.)

ZIP whenever possible. I have WinRAR and don't really mind RARs, as for the other types I have no idea (except for LZH, yay LZH!) and would prefer not to have to use them, even if they are "technically" superior.

RAR, because winRAR is free and doesn't take up a lot of space. Plus it easier just to right click an item and say "add to archive." Nice simple output of .RARs.

I like .RAR. Really intuitive, and allows for more exploration.
Besides, thats the sound I make when I see flamboyant amounts of idiocy on the interwebs: "Rar!"
...
*cough*

.Rar. Kicks the teeth out of ye olde ZIP.

I have tried 7zip and KGB but

1. 7zip's program sucks
and
2. KGB crashes and gives up and dies

So, yeah.

7zip for storage (am I the only one who doesn't have problems with this?), zip for distribution.

UNIX i use gzip
Windows, i use ZIP because sending to ZIP file is easier than selecting options for raring; plus, i have a class of average computers who some of which do not know computers can be customized outside of what is in their OS
