You know how it is. Recent discussion and all that leads to a topic.

I'd like to believe this one's a bit self-explanatory.

RAR because of context menu, ZIP sometimes.

7z when I feel like it (i.e: not often)

I like .zips. :3

I'm perfectly fine with handling .rars and .7zs though. Raccoon Sam convinced me to try 7zip's "ultra" compression thing; it took five times as long to compress and only shaved off 40kb of the file (less than 0.1%).

ZIP seems to be a very common compression type for everything that I download, then theres the occasional RAR and 7z, but I mostly use the ZIP format.

I probably have over 200 Zip files all over my hard drive .

I prefer to use RARs:

- Better compression
- Less time
- Context menu
- Good interface

7z has its own perk too:
- Insanely good compression on similar files (e.g. ROMs, text)

...but mostly drawbacks:
- Interface blows
- Can't test archives in 7z's main program
- Or add files to existing archives
- Time it takes to compress is insane
- Memory usage is insane
- Spits out files larger than RAR with other types of data (executables, images, things that generally don't compress well), even at the highest settings

So most files I use are RAR. I rarely use ZIP any longer because, well... RAR's better

ZIP all the time. It's the first compression type I've ever used and I'm quite comfortable with it, so I never really tried any other. I do have WinRAR as well, just because I've been seeing them pop up more often when I'm downloading files.

Header with random useless information here.
----------------------------
I personally prefer ZIP for no reason at all. RAR comes in second place. I use winrar anyways so meh.

And I sometimes used a kinda obscure format .dgc or something. -DGCA. Bassically it's a .ZIP with better compression.

However I can't stand 7z...

RAR, although I know that 7zip has better compression rates. On the other hand does saving 20 MB in a 200 MB file for me (when downloading) doesn't make too much difference, when it comes to the internet connection/speed nowadays.
Otherwise, when I am uploading, I'll take these 20 MB in account, as my upload speed is limited (don't upload stuff too often anyway, even when I have access to higher speeds) - if my recipient for example doesn't have 7zip then and that archive is smaller than one from WinRAR, then I'll simply make it a self-extracting archive.

As for KGB, it probably has the best compression rate ever (requiring a very good machine, and the program still is beta software) - if you disregard neat tricks like Decompression Bombs, a well known file is 42 KB compressed - but when trying to extract it, it grows up to 4 Petabyte

I use 7z, bzip, and zip. There's also the rare occasion where I'll use RARs

.zip

Mostly because when distributing simfiles this is the format it requires you to upload it as.

.rar would be next as I think its the most useful in extracting/compressing foreign character named files (which I have lots).

RAR but I find myself HAVING to use ZIP due to BMS not using anything but ZIP for their archiving purposes...

Don't get too frustrated, if MiniSM ever goes live (ahhahahahahaha) it'll only accept ZIP.

This is a limitation of my choices, not something I want to force on people.

However, BMS should allow other things since they don't actually interact with the archive at all (afaik)

No. It seperately askes for an upload of the .sm, not reading it from the archive.

That's basically what I just said.

I know. Just restating that.

Although if that wasn't in play I'm sure not only would there be .rars but also .7z with uber compression for a sim greater than 10 mb and they'd want people to pay for uploading higher sized sims.

I prefer .7z, but I use zips a lot because, if I'm sending it to someone, it's basically guaranteed that they will be able to open it.

It actually makes me wonder... if BMS doesn't actually interact with the file at all, wouldn't it be technically possible to upload "simfile.7z.zip"? (i.e., dual-compressed)

Hm.
