My old one died, but I was expecting it: Windows 2000 doesn't have enough room for security patches on a 2 gig drive.

So, I want to set up a server using Linux and Apache.

I have no idea how to do that, and all of the online guides assume I already have Linux set up.

Help?

You should probably install a distro like Ubuntu and get familiar with using the console/terminal if you haven't already.
...

Of course, if all the guides assume you have Linux installed, then, well... install Linux

Ubuntu Server has Apache, PHP, Perl, and MySQL all preinstalled iirc. If not, then set it up anyway then read https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/server/C/

Ubuntu server looks good. I'll try it.

1) Learn to use Linux
2) Learn to use Apache (and PHP/MySQL/whatever else you plan to use)
3) ???
4) PROFIT!

Apache is available for Windows, so you don't have to do 1 and 2 in order. You might set up a temporary server on a spare Windows machine until you're comfortable enough with Linux to migrate it. It's pretty easy to set up as long as you're not the kind who curls into the fetal position at the sight of a config file.

I've actually been using Apache on Windows. The only problem was Windows.

My server's already up and running, and this is the second time I've done anything in a shell. (The first time was trying to get Linux to run on my old 386. It didn't turn out so well.)

I'll get Apache sending the right headers tomorrow. For now, sleep.
