Then make it load into RAM!

Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/Memory Management/

Now, double-click on the DisablePagingExecutive key, and change the value to 1 and reboot your computer.

When it comes back, the kernel will be in the RAM instead of a Page file. This improved my computer speed.

WARNING! Make sure that your computer has 256mb of RAM or more.

Aside from the warning I would never change anything important I am not really sure about it. This includes fiddling around with vital Registry keys, as that particular example really can screw up your Windows installation (like you said).
Since many magazines advertize with slogans like "Improve your computer's speed by xxx % with 'hidden' Windows tweaks!" and colourful images, many people who don't know just will try out these "tips" - and probably will be screwed up if something goes wrong.

Similar like beta software NEVER should go onto a system used for work, I strongly advise to backup at least the most important data and/or system partition data with an imaging program like TrueImage and the like ...

I would actually recommend the whole argument against "using beta software" because idiot software developers seem to forget that there is a phase other than "beta" to release their applications in.

However, changing it to "If there is a better program released that does the job and is proven to be more stable overall, use it instead" would work.

...

Also, a better idea to speed up your computer in general is to minimize the size of the swap file (System -> Advanced -> Performance Options -> Advanced -> Virtual Memory/Change), especially if you notice your RAM usage is extremely low.

Exactly

Otherwise, working on a limited account should make a big deal - since you cannot change any critical entrys (such as regedit or deleting important system files). I work with one since about two weeks, and have no major problems with it: For installing programs I quickly swith to the admin one, and it's done. Also at least a virus cannot destroy vital data that fast ...

As for that entry - like in that thread, it is not possible to steer Windows to not use the page file (even if 2 GB+ of RAM is installed), but without it some programs might not work as well.

Investing in more RAM and throwing out resoure-eating software (McAfee and Norton *cough*) helps a lot.

I'd try this.. but I don't want to mess up my computer. Would it work well on 2GB RAM? I'm running XP SP2.

Some beta software is quite stable. I've been using the Opera 9.5 beta for several months, and had it crash only 3-4 times.

It will. If it doesn't, just change the value back to 0 in safe mode.

This page describes the change in more detail. Unfortunately they don't specify what "a lot" of memory is, but it was last updated in March 2003, so probably a gigabyte or two is plenty.

The best things you can do to maximize performance as far as pagefile goes is minimize use of it and latency accessing it. If possible, putting it on its own partition on an infrequently-accessed disk can give you a noticeable boost. Also, in the System control panel, you can set a minimum and maximum size. If you can afford the disk space you might want to just set both to several gigabytes, so that it never changes size, as this will be a performance hit and will cause fragmentation.

Of course probably the best way to improve performance is to get rid of resource-hogging crapware.

(And yeah, no real harm in trying out registry tweaks, as long as you back stuff up first and know how to deal with it if things go wrong.)
