For my Vista computer, at least. It‘s a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter, and I don‘t have a driver for it anymore or something...
After running Windows Update, I saw that 2 drivers failed to install. I think...I think that this necessary driver was a victim of this.

Either state what more info you need or post a link I can use...until then, I‘ll be out of the forum, and in despair...

What update number was it? You can find it by going to Windows Update and looking at your recently installed updates. You could Google the ID and see if anyone else has had this problem.

You can always try System Restore, too...

That just said it all.

You don't have a device driver CD either? Have you tried looking for said drivers, like here?

EDIT: Looking at that link closer and at Belkin's site...I can't see any Windows Vista support, or at least anything that tells me that it is supported by Vista with an appropriate driver.

I'd do System Restore then as well.

Yeah, I did that once, but it didn't work, so I HAD given up hope.
However, backing up even further did the trick, although I lost whatever I had in Firefox.

Windows Update, I hate you. Go curl up and die.

That'd be quite the contrary for me.

I mean, it's been like this since I updated: [08:29:42] <~Aerakin> Uptime: 4wks 1day 23hrs 55mins 45secs

Actually the hardware supports Vista (click on 'Specs'), whereas I don't know if Vista was supported natively or that entry was just put in later, like when a newer driver was added to your W-LAN adapter. Could it be a newer model/version on that site I linked?
Anyay, you always could try to contact your manufacturer via e-mail; include the KB-number of that particular Windows-patch, which you think it ruined your driver/router.
Besides, I don't think Windows Update trashed that driver particularly, maybe your Windows installation had an error, where updating and rebooting just caused that effect. Single KB _can_ be uninstalled (reversing the Windows Update) in the Software Remove option inside the Control Panel, though, but I don't recommend playing too much with this.

I let Windows download and install those updates automatically and it never caused me any trouble (also working with a limited account most of the time) ...

That's fine and all, except, you know, for most of us, it works.

(Cue 13-week uptime bragging)

Honestly, you should check your hardware's homepage and attempt to (re)download the drivers for it, if you haven't already. Following Surlent's email advice would also be a good idea.

Didn't you have to restart your computer because of the Windows Update thing, thereby ending the record-breaking uptime at 13wk?

Because critical system updates are less important than OMGUPTIME and should be ignored if there's not a program that forces them on you, right?

(In other words: I somehow suspect that if he knew about critical updates, he would've installed them regardless of whether Windows Update did anything or not.)

I restarted because I was doing something else that required a reboot (mainly fiddling with some programs that hooked into important drivers, which did benefit me quite a bit).

However, I did use the restart as an oppertunity to catch up on the other 20-something updates I was missing, as well as clean out my startup and services lists again.

I usually save updates for when I reboot.

In short: My uptime wasn't "ruined", since it was a reboot by choice, not force.

Windows Update even still works for my old Windows 98--though it didn't do a lot. Just some random hotfixes for some weird errors people don't even exploit anymore.

I've found it only restarted my computer by force once--keeping the window to the side seems to work just fine.

Except, you know, when you have to install many systems from scratch quite often. Yay for Offline Update

I was meaning a more general computer-user who maintains at most one or two machines.

Obviously, if you set up computers on a regular basis, something more efficient than Windows Update will be needed, both in terms of bandwidth and time.

Although thanks for pointing out that site, I'd wondered where it was

The internet is obviously not the place for sarcasm it seems, because it looks like you missed that in my post (or did I misinterpret your post? ).
