My PS2 had a long, fruitful life (made in '03 and died yesterday).

Two Q's:

1. How much should I pay for a used system only (I still have controllers, cables, etc.)
2. Where could I get one from cheap? My local videogame store wants $80!

I bought mine last summer for $70 . That is the cheapest one I could find without going on the internet (because after I paid shipping it would of come to about $70 anyway )

A PS2 is something I would absolutely NOT buy used under any circumstances. They're far too fragile. Who knows what the previous owner might have done to it?

(case in point: a weird friend of mine turns the system on and off every time he swaps games or searches through his memory cards, which is a great way to burn something out prematurely)

On the aside, I've had my boss at work go through two PS2s, both were in good shape, both were bought off eBay.

Only problem for him was one of them was a PAL/Australian unit that did him no good. He ended up buying a slim on eBay for ~85 dollars.

I've seen -MODDED- PS2s go for about 100. I've seen some PS2s on eBay go for 50 (if you're lucky). Most times you will have to hit the hundred dollar mark, which is kinda dumb since you can buy a new one, slim 77K1 series for 130.

If you know someone who's getting a PS3, he might be willing to part with his PS2 for cheap. I actually got mine for free that way.

Then again, I hear newer PS3s might be losing backwards compatibility, so that may affect people's decisions... but it's still worth a shot.

Sort of. Every PS2 and PS3 ever sold has PS1 backwards compatibility, but certain models of PS3 lack PS2.

New PS3s will not have backwards compatibility. I don't have any sources readily available, but this seems like common knowledge.

Ps3 60 gig - backwards
(Both have been discontinued)

Ps3 40 gig - only Ps3 games
Ps3 20 gig - only Ps3 games (discontinued)

Its a pain in the ass trying to remember it all the time. The reason why they are taking out the backwards compatibility is to keep the system at the $400 and $500 price point but be able to have it with a larger hard drive. So in the end, people bitching about the price kinda fusked them over in the end. Honestly, I wish they didn't have a Blu-ray player installed in it, that way it would have been cheaper with a good amount of memory and the ability to play the Ps2 and Ps1 games.

Since when does an 80 gig hard drive cost that much? I got one 4 years ago for $100, now you can get 320 gigs for that much. And yeah, games don't need more than a DL DVD or 2 unless they have tons of FMV (and who wants their game to be a movie?).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the 80 gig PS3s only have software backwards compatibility, not hardware? And the lower ones (excluding the original models like the 60 gig) don't have any.
