When I installed gentoo linux, I only made a 5GB partition in VMWare. Now, I need to make some more space. Assuming I have a larger 10GB partition available, what is the best program to help me move all that data from the 5GB partition to the 10GB partition? I do not want to reinstall gentoo again.

Also, although my knowledge of the linux boot process is quite limited, i am open to messing around with it if there are good docs out there.

This seems to be more for moving to a seperate disk, not the same disk. My guess would be that you would have to do some fiddling with the MBR to get it working right... especially since swapping actual disks usually results in the same partitions/setup, whereas moving to a new partition actually requires changing things.

...

Although, in VMWare, I always thought you could expand partitions. Maybe that was just RAM...

(Amusingly, I managed to copy Windows 98's OS by simply burning the entire drive (3GB) onto a DVD and copying it to a disk that had a Win98 MBR already)

Yeah, Windows 9x wasn't very picky about where/how it was installed, as long as a) it was on the same drive letter and b) the boot sector/files were properly set up. IIRC, I would usually drag and drop the entire directory structure to the new drive (mounted as a slave), do a sys [driveletter]:, and then swap the drives. Too bad you can't do it that easily anymore.

Well I assumed he meant moving it to a different disk (image), it doesn't make much sense otherwise.

It's still not fundamentally different. Move the files, make sure the bootloader knows the new location, and boot. Really, it's that simple.
