So I was investigating which areas of my hard drive are taking up the most space, when I noticed something odd. 18.7GB in F:\RECYCLER. But only 5GB in the "Recycle Bin" on the desktop. So I emptied that, but this directory still has 18.7GB in it. Except when I go in there, all that's there is a bunch of empty directories.

Weird shit ensues. I check it with the command line. Shows a bunch of stuff I deleted a long time ago. But when I try to browse to those directories, they don't exist! Even when I paste them in the address bar, it quickly changes back to what was there before, giving me only about half a second to hit Enter. Also notice it's switched to calling itself IE and treating this as a file:/// URL.

As I'm sniffing around in here suddenly the directory gets randomly deleted and the window closes. Now when I go back into those directories, each one only contains a single subdirectory, and when I try to enter it, it shows the usual deleted file dialog. The sizes are inconsistent too.

So WTF is with these "deleted" inaccessible files hogging up disk space?

1. tried rebooting? (figure you have)
2. Last attempt, boot a recent Linux LiveCD (like Knoppix or GParted or something), mount the partition read/write, and delete? (you can actually delete the RECYCLER directory entirely, Windows Explorer will just recreate it when it needs it)

I'd run CHKDSK and see if the filesystem is corrupted.

Try disabling the recycle bin if CHKDSK can't find any problems.
If there are other user accounts, log in as them and empty the recycle bin.

That's the weirdest computer error I've ever seen.
I'd say go with chungy's idea, use a partition manager and delete F:\ entirely, then reboot and see if that worked.

Uhm, I'd just delete F:\ anyway, since this "RECYCLER" thing seems to be the only thing there and it doesn't seem to be the real recycle bin.

After a bit of googling...

Recycler is, for all intents and purposes, the recycle bin for NTFS partitions. (FAT partitions have a folder called Recycled instead).

Inside Recycler is a recycle bin for each user, which is named after some kind of ID number the user has. You should be able to delete the contents of this subfolder, but you can't do it from within windows explorer, so you need to use cmd.exe.

Could be hard drive corruption.

You'd need something more thorough to fix that; unfortunately the best thing I know of is Spinrite which costs $89.

But it probably would fix all your hard drive-related problems.

Additionally, I do not advocate software piracy, for it not only harms the people who makes the programs, but discourages innovation and the creation of more such products as useful as this.

While it may seem like a high price, compared to throwing out a hard drive and replacing it, nay, many hard drives, it is but a bargain. Additionally, the cost of it out of money from your pocket is much less than the collective damage to creativity and innovation in the private software industry. As any program which isn't force-loaded on (like XP) and isn't already free (like Firefox) which doesn't succeed in getting plenty of buyers, may be slaughtered by people pirating it en masse, leaving it up to one or the other to replace it. And odds are, the free one or the pre-loaded one, or even another private one, will not be the same. (duh)

Luckily, in this case, it seems to have already had plenty of people buying it, but that is no excuse to steal it, no matter how small it may be, no matter how many torrents of it exist (if that's even needed to steal it.)

Feel free to flip around 'Torrents' at every program you see. But don't come crying back to me when the programs you torrent eventually stop being made due to lack of profits.

I should have qualified that post with a . If I didn't know that software couldn't fix mechanical hardware failure, then I am not worthy of even having a computer science degree.
