I don't know how it happened, but somehow my brother screwed up our home PC. Last time he was home alone for an extended period of time, our computer contracted four trojans at the same time. This time, however...

This occurs whenever I try to unzip a file or download any sort of file to the computer. It's taken half a minute to save a 1-2 MB file to the desktop, simply sitting on the verge of freezing at 99%. It took three minutes to extract a 1 MB .zip folder.

I have the free version of AVG, and aside from a change in "shell" it detects no viruses.

Think you can help me undo the damage caused by my brother? D:

Isn't this part of the forum for help about the board?

AVG Free is a virus scanner only. It won't pick up spy/ad/general shitware. Let Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D have a look.

And yes, this is the wrong forum.

Joe: Window's program extractor thing.
teconmoon&HH: Sorry, I'm used to the old Help forum. I'll have someone move it.

I know I tried using Ad-Aware and it found nothing, but I'll try using Spybot S&D.

If that doesn't work, check to see if your explorer.exe exactly matches that of a working computer. I can PM you a link to the 2000 or XP file. (Which are you using, and what is the file version?)

Although you said as such for the Windows extractor program, is there a way you can close the process out in Task Manager? You should be able to sort by CPU drain and you should be able to close it out that way. If I got a program name (.EXE or whatever), at least that way we could see if it's the actual program going caw-caw cuckoo or if it's actually a virus/trojan in disguise.

Okay, I just got home and ran Spybot. After it crashed the computer once (), it found something.

Should I accept the change or no? I don't want to lose anything of importance. D:

Edit: Okay, now my computer has crashed twice and I don't know why. This time, I said to deny the change. Is that good?

Edit2: Okay, my computer has crashed three times already, and it always gives me this error. It just started today.

Please, what is wrong with my computer now? D:

Edit: Make that four times. ;0;

The spybot error is just an automatic memory dumper, and can be disabled in My Computer.

The BSoD is corrupted system files, corrupted drivers, or not enough hard disk space according to Microsoft. If you still have your installation CD, you could try using its repair feature. Or, see if you can get into safe mode without any crashes.

I was asking around for help on another forum, and it turns out the strain from running Spybot & IE caused the fan to kick on, and, well... it was dust.

Also, Spybot seems to have cleared up the problem of the zip thing.

I mean, it doesn't go as fast as normal, but it's not taking minutes to extract small stuff. :3

Perhaps it's time to restrict your brother's PC access? Set up a separate account with reduced privileges, at least?

(I'd be rather irritated if my brother regularly screwed up my computer like that...)

I wish I could, but my mother uses it at the same time for work and stuff, and she trusts him too much to allow a restricted account for him.

I mean, the computer still hasn't recovered from this, which has been going on for what seems like a year now. No matter how many times you agree, it always asks, and always keeps the default as "WinZip File".

Edit: The file extraction thing seems to be truly partly fixed. I just extracted a 37MB file from a zip in 10-15 seconds. Strangely, it didn't show the progress bar at all, and just sorta froze with the "Extract" button down until it jumped to the "lol done" frame.
