Just curious what your computer's average memory usage.

To figure this out, close anything you wouldn't have open when the computer is 'idle' (I.E. you're not at it), then control-alt delete, then look at 'Commit Charge' and the number on the left should be it. If you use anything other than XP, I cannot help you. XP (The emoticon)

For starters, I have 1 GB memory and currently am using 588 MB of it.

Usually about 350MB when I'm not doing anything. Other than that, it's pretty impossible to put a number on it; I have 1GB of RAM, yet I've used like 700MB of swap before when doing a heavy task.

On my Pentium 3, the worst I ever got with 384MB RAM and a 2GB swap was about 600MB used.

My peak on this dual-core, with 2GB RAM and 4GB swap file is ~1.6GB and is currently at 855MB used. Most of the problem is coming from Pidgin though (probably a mem leak; it always tends to go up after days of use). On startup, though I'm usually at around 200-300MB.

Header with random useless information here.
----------------------------
~205MB when I'm not doing anything except browsing forums, aka with firefox open.
~180MB when there's in fact, nothing active.

However most of time it just goes crazy randomly...

With Firefox open, around 735MB (72%). Without, about half (512MB).

Maximum: 1.1 GB
Current: Around 615 MB
Typical idle: Around 577 MB
Minimum idle: Around 265 MB
Absolute minimum: 82.1 MB

RAM installed: 640 MB

In case you were wondering, 1.1 GB is the highest it's ever gotten, not the highest since I turned it on.

Generally the "Commit Charge" is around ~180M when I just start up the computer. Right now it's at 641M (my computer's been on for a few weeks and I have tons of things running).

• Opera is taking up 161M (peak 172M)
• Spybot's "Tea Timer" thing (I forget what it does, some anti-spyware thing that's been on this computer forever) is at 62.5M (peak 104M)
• MSN/WLM is at 40.5M (peak 55.3M)
• svchost.exe is at 26.7M (peak 36.3M)
• explorer.exe is at 19.6M (peak 37.6M)
• Launchy is at 13.1M (peak 20.5M)
• WinAMP is at 12.8M (peak 43.3M)
• Everything else is under 10M right now

RAM/pagefile usage.

Varies depending on what I'm doing.

Usually around 500-600MB for me (got 2GB RAM), but I always leave many things running even when I'm gone (WinAMP, mIRC, Klient, Firefox, EditPlus, etc.), so 1GB is probably a minimum for me now, even on XP

But I've never filled the whole 2GB RAM yet, even with this

539MB, out of 2GB RAM. I usually keep mIRC, Trillian, and Firefox open at all times for quick access. The biggest memory hog right now is Firefox at almost exactly 100MB (and slowly climbing ), followed by svchost.exe at less than a quarter of that, 24MB.

I generally try to keep my background and startup processes in check for maximum sexy-smooth computing. Anything I don't recognize is immediately investigated and, if necessary, terminated. I don't need automatic update checkers or registration naggers sucking on my system resources, thanks.

It's mostly on 985MB out of 512MB RAM when idle. Mainly because some process is eating all my RAM. That and µtorrent is always open .

I think I need some more RAM .

Mine starts off at about 1GB when it first comes on, then falls down to around 600MB after a few moments. It's about 861 right now, with iTunes, FireFox, VIRC, and "µ"Torrent open.

Used by cache: 61% ~ 1249.0 MB
Used by user: 38% ~ 755.0 MB

That's with my virtual test server running all the time in the background too.

The heaviest process here is Opera, weighing in at 64M.

Followed by explorer.exe ( ), pidgin, svchost, and Launchy.

lol, that's one of the most overly-complex memory monitors I've seen. Why does it always seem to have quite a bit of swap/pagefile in use? That's odd

The purpose was to be "overly complex" and "generally pointless".

Also, who knows. It's probably related to the fact I almost never actually close anything...

(For some reason, gnotify is taking up over 100M in total...)
