I use MadEdit, myself, but I can see how it's fought over so much--each text editor's features can drastically influence your coding; a proper highlighting system, for example, can prevent dumb errors at times.

emacs is my primary choice of editor for UNIX. On windows, and I'm not programming using Cygwin, then it is Textpad.

Anyways, shouldn't this be in Programming forum?

I saw this also. I'm not much of a programmer and don't understand the whole of the humor, but I still thought it was funny.

I use EditPlus. It does what I need, no more, no less.

I never got the whole bitchfests over text editors... use the one you like.

Dreamweaver MX for PHP when I can though, if only because it's easy to hit F12 to see the site in action

I think that the butterfly part was hilarious .

I will probably use Notepad for all the things I program, at least until I find a better program to use, but since when will I ever program anything?

I generally use Notepad2. I like it so much that I renamed it to notepad.exe and replaced the Windows notepad with it.

Real programmers assemble their own computers out of individual atoms and then use the butterfly method. Duh.

Drag's Post #568
REAL programmers use adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, sugars, and phosphates.

I use:
Bloodshed Dev-C++ for C/C++
Netbeans for Java (except I hate java )
Notepad++ for assembly, php, and whatever else I see fit
MS Notepad for notes, html, and all of the above, sometimes.

When I'm using Linux (usually over telnet or ssh), I use emacs instead of vi, because I'm used to the menu-driven way of doing things, and vi doesn't use any menus.

I use Smultron or EditPlus. Depending if I'm on a Mac or on a PC.

I've never really gotten the fascination with text editors.

I use Textpad for writing PHP in Windows at work (although Notepad++ is also quite nice).

- Visible white space
- Line numbers
- Nice search / replace / find in files / find next tool.
- Tabbed window management
- Text highlighting

It's not as hard-working as Netbeans or the MS IDEs, but it does a good enough job. I particularly miss the auto-completion tools that the afformentioned sport. I use Text Wrangler on the Mac at home, which is like Textpad and Notepad++, but when I get a Macbook Pro for work I will probably buy BBEdit.

As for Vi and Emacs, meh, I can think of more important things to worry about. I use neither, and I've got nothing to complain about. Programmers make the biggest dramaqueens.
