Just a quick thread, does anyone have any ideas on how to deal with a laptop whose cooling system was designed by a high-school dropout?

My current idea uis to take a cardboard box that is the right size for the laptop, and cut out enough so that it has a few vents and on lager one where the laptop's intake is, make a seal around the laptop's intake, and then load the box up with enough fans and a power supply to force-feed a lot of air into the laptop, since I can't figure out any other way to get this stupid thing to not overheat when I"m trying to do anything.

BTW, this is the best analogy to it:

Maybe my laptop will be USABLE soon!

I can only think of a cooling pad, but those broke pretty easy when I had them. :/ My fans kick in, but they don't do quite enough to prevent an overheat...

My laptop is completely useless because its cooling system is useless.

Unfortunately, I do not think there is any answer, as so-called cooling pads are also useless.

Just do what I did. Open it up and pry out the fan.

Seriously though, can the fan even spin? I removed my old laptop's fan because it was too clogged with dust to spin.

Also, you should try SpeedFan if you haven't already.

530 Cooling pads DO work to an extent, but they're not the greatest...

I used to raise the laptop and put an ice pack under it when I could still take it with me...

Not with my laptop.

It overheats to the point of shutdown, even with a 3 foot tall box fan sitting RIGHT UNDER IT ON HIGH.

I think perhaps if I used it atop Mount Everest it wouldn't overheat.

well, standing on a solid surface, my laptop can run at 60*C when idling

gets up to 70+ when I"m actually using it

530 Mine can be pretty silent when idle... though in use, the fans are almost always on.

...I'm trying to run Win95 in Bochs on the PSP just to run some old windows apps. :/

Try undervolting. Use Notebook Hardware Contorls or RMClock. Use prime95 to test if the undervolting is stable or not.

If it's a gaming laptop, you're pretty much screwed. Otherwise, like has been said, try Speedfan, it can force fans to turn on or you can just tell it when to turn it on rather than letting your BIOS make the obviously wrong decisions.
