Apparently my computer likes to play them at an average of 7 fps, with the occasional utter failure.

I'm pretty sure it's either some hardware bottleneck or my graphics drivers, and I don't have any better hardware or less explosive drivers.

Facepalm.

Any suggestions, or am I stuck with this?

If you're not using VLC, then try it. It uses a lot less processing power than WMP. Had no trouble playing all my videos on an old machine that WMP could barely run on.

If you are, try completely removing and reinstalling it.

Are you sure that file isn't corrupt though?

I am using VLC. I downloaded 0.8.6d a couple days ago, but apparently that makes no difference.

It plays just fine on my dad's laptop. It didn't drop a single frame. I checked.

First get Media Player Classic then you should get combined community codec pack and lastly coreavc for H.264 decoding. Configure everything correctly and you will have the best video viewing setup ever. And coreavc gives you a huge frame rate boost on H.264 files.

If VLC doesn't work, I highly doubt MPC will. (I was an MPC fan until it crashed/locked up one too many times and failed to play a couple of fairly common video formats.)

Well from my experience MPC is better with handling external codecs. And considering the fact that coreavc is the best H.264 decoder there is I would think it's rather worth a try.

If the Community Codec Pack/WMP Classic/whatever still doesn't fix it, then I bet it's just your computer being too weak to play H264 stuff. What's your proccessor speed?

CoreAVC costs money, which I really shouldn't be spending when I'm trying to save up for new computer parts. I'm afraid that's not an option for me.

My processor speed is currently 1.25 GHz, but that's just because the motherboard is incompatible. It should be 2 GHz, according to this page.

Yeah, that's way too slow. The fact that your CPU/motherboard architecture is a few generations old doesn't help matters, either--you've got more bottlenecks than just the CPU speed in there. I see a new computer in your future.

Hmm...

I can afford this, but that in itself makes it suspicious. Why is a motherboard so cheap?

I suppose I could get a motherboard for my Celeron instead, but that won't get me anywhere either.



...Might as well try those nVidia drivers again. At least those are free.

That motherboard is so cheap because it's pretty old. Looking at the specs, it only supports DDR RAM (not even dual-channel) and AGP graphics, with no SATA connectors for hard drives/whatever. Basically, it's a cheap board, but it gives you no real room for improvement outside of a marginally better processor.

If your processor is only running at 1.25 GHz, then reasonably speaking, a processor running at 1.73 GHz would work better. Doesn't matter how good your chip is if it's so dreadfully underclocked.

Later chips are more efficient. 1.25 GHz with that old a mobo is a horrible block to something like H264, which is made with computers of today in mind (Like, 2 2.2 GHz cores in tandem) which runs nice and smoothly, say, for me, but dies horribly for you.

Ew. Ew ew ew. Stay as far away from PC-CHIPS as possible. There's a reason their boards are so cheap. Just look at the overall rating--out of 250 reviews, over 1/4 of them gave the board the lowest rating...
