I remember hearing that as well, which I also found rather annoying... but I'm not about to sell my soul to AT&T to get Google Maps

(I get much better service selling my soul to Verizon)

There was a free portion of the update, but IIRC it only consisted of the security portion of the update (lock out jailbreaking).

*The Windows desktop is called "Program Manager" for compatibility with Windows 3.1 and earlier. It cannot be minimized for the same reason.
