I couldn't help but notice every N64 emulator video plugin I've seen breaks horribly if it loses focus while in fullscreen mode.

  • Direct64 v0.5.03.25: Minimizes itself. When restored, locks up the emulator hard and corrupts its settings so the window is off-screen next time it runs.
  • Jabo 3D 1.6: Minimizes itself. When restored, displays nothing until you leave and re-enter fullscreen mode, at which point it often crashes.
  • glN64 v0.4.1: Handles it, but makes all translucent windows flicker and prompts me to select the microcode every time I start a game. No good.
  • Glide64 v0.8: Changes the screen resolution (not even supporting my monitor's native resolution) which breaks the fuck out of everything.
  • RCP Direct3D v0.6, TR64 OpenGL v0.8.8: Manual microcode selection? WTF?
  • Rice's Video 6.0.0 (DirectX): Doesn't respond to input sometimes, locks up the emulator when losing focus, flickers translucent windows.
  • Rice's Video 6.0.0 (OpenGL): Severely slow and broken, flickers translucent windows.
  • z64gl, 1964 OpenGL 3.0.0: Crashes at startup.


Which is apparently every plugin in existence, except perhaps some existing only on emutalk.net which is conveniently down. Are there any that don't break?

Most N64 plugins seem very poorly programmed on the input/output side of things. All using DirectX (Which I consider broken to begin with.) but they often behave erratically or not at all.

As far as your problem, it looks like you're out of luck since that's pretty much all of the ones worth noting that I know of. Any other ones are very very basic plugins with very little compatibility.

Even on the dual-core I'm running it has permanent issues with a lot of ROMs that interest me on the console. Lord knows they still haven't fixed Puyo 4 yet...

Fortunately, someone by the name of MooglyGuy is working on real N64 emulation, as opposed to the current high-level "emulation" (HLE) that's been nearly stagnant for the past decade. It'll likely require more CPU power than the Pentagon could provide, but that's how most good emulators start out anyway.

Who knows, maybe it will be able to play kirby 64 correctly? Or not crash every time a sprite farts!

N64 emulation doesn't really suck that bad. At least games are completable. The one game that I've had trouble to the point that made it unplayable was Mario Tennis. And I've never had problems with GBA Emulation.

Virtual Boy is not GBA. But eh, N64 emus are not that great, but they aren't terrible. Still, the only thing I use them for is online play of a few games that we know work anyway, so it's not like I'm an expert on it.

And VBA shouldn't be that slow unless you're running a rather old system or you're running it at very high graphic resolutions and options. Even my system with a good vid card will choke at high res with filtering options at times. However there are certain titles that do tend to make the compy bog on overlay effects like the overworld on a Chocobo in FF6 Advance; if memory serves, the SNES version w/ ZSNES was like this as well versus a 200MHz or so comp in the DOS daze before 1.0 came out for you young'ns.

Then again, you were talking about Virtual Boy period so...screw that paragraph. Get back to the fact that N64 sucks, k?

Project 64 tends to work better on the more popular games for me. Like OoT, Star Fox 64, and Super Mario 64 are great. Yet Dr. Mario 64 had graphics issues. So does the Pokemon Stadium series.

What a mix up. I forget that I'm one of the very few owners left who still has a working Virtual Boy, even now. In fact I can see it from this chair as it's on the shelf rather than boxed.

I'm going to take that as a no. I noticed not just losing focus, but also changing resolutions (e.g. when switching windowed/fullscreen mode) causes problems, so fullscreen mode is basically out of the question.

I was able to hack together a fake windowboxed mode though by running Mupen64 with the status/toolbars disabled and brutally ripping out its menu, title bar and border with the API. (I know it has -nogui, but that disables the hotkeys for some reason. ) Then you put it above a solid black fullscreen window and it's close enough.

It's true though, N64 emulators do suck ass. I guess it's because there's like no technical info available. People who have it won't share it. Pain in the ass it is.

I have an idea. Run the emulator in windowed mode at 640x480, and put the emulator program in compatibility mode and choose the setting "Run in 640 x 480 Screen Resolution" Then, you would have a pixelated fullscreen.
