I don't usually advertise these, but it's not a wimpy petitiononline thing. It's backed by some major people.

If you want to save XP, This seems to be the most possible way to do it. I dunno if it'll work, but it's worth a try (and some fake address information).

Their position is XP can be kept around without admitting Vista is a mistake; customers get what they want and Microsoft continues to get money. Therefore it's a win-win until they make something the likers of XP find is a true sequel to XP.

What do you think, anyway, sign or not? Is it useful? Or just silly>

Basically I heard only bad opinions of friends having Visa (majority of them with fairly new, both cheap and expensive machines) preinstalled. Of course if a laptop came with tiny 512 Megs of RAM and a Vista Home , that cannot be much of objective criticism, but otherwise it is driver-problems mostly.

Otherwise I'd have nothing against Vista itself, I just have to second chungy's post: If those flaws get fixed, possibily in a future Service Pack or even better as early as possible, I'd change my opinion about Vista immediately

Actually, how this will go is probably the same way as ME did between 98 and 2000. That's why Vista's already dubbed ME2 (henceforth, Mistake Edition 2). XP is still going to get a new service pack out for it (SP3) around the time Vista gets SP1, except the consensus seems to think that XP will benefit well more than Vista will.

Aside from driver problems, Vista is a HUGE RAM AND RESOURCE GUZZLER in comparison to XP...definitely not something you'd want to put most people through that have the barest essentials to run it and don't have the capacity for their comp to run it.

People will just used XP until 'Windows 7' makes its debut. It was probably a duck test of some sort to test the water with an idea before getting to the actual meat of it...and it'll probably take until Windows 8 or 9 before MS gets it right like they did with XP (at around SP2).

Indeed, Hiryuu. That is what the petition is about, actually. "We believe this is Windows ME 2. In response to the backlash, you extended Windows 98 until Windows 2000 became feasible."

Therefore, the aim of this one is to extend XP forever (maybe a bit much? Who'll use it in 20 years?) in order to buy time for the next broadly accepted Windows flavor.

Thing is, it has been extended once. XP's sales were to cease at the beginning of the year but computer corporations have already seen the effect of Vista on a LARGE amount of systems in comparison to XP and consumer complaints on the same scale. I think it's now up to May.

My guess is if such a petition worked that XP would be allowed to exist until about 2010. That's quite a stretch for such a past-its-prime OS. I mean honestly this OS has been around since...2001?

You think hardly-working MS would start figuring it out after a while.

EDIT: After looking, I guess it's been bumped to end-June.

Has XP really been around that long? Wow, didn't quite realize how little work Microsoft has been putting into OS's. Pathetic, really. I must agree that XP should be extended, though, it's far superior to Vista in every way except visually. Honestly, I'm thinking that we're going to hit a bit of a wall with OS's soon. Why do we really need a new OS? What would a new Windows do any better? I know there are issues to be fixed, but that can go to patches, what would we need/want feature-wise that isn't already there? It's not the ideal OS, that's not what I mean, but you can see where I'm coming from, right?

The only way XP's getting beat by Vista is DX 10/10.1 coverage...even then not many games take advantage of it...far less so now due to the fact that Vista is getting a severe red flag with many people.

They should just let XP have 10 usage. I don't see what's so bad about XP being able to use it unless a 64-bit OS is needed for it. In which case that exists already for Windows XP.

I still use 2000. It's fine for me, except it means I'll probably never get to play Age of Empires 3.

So, uh, what are some of these commonly mentioned problems with Vista? So far the only one I've really heard about is the RAM usage. (And some other stuff, mainly from Mac commercials.)

In looking it up, that doesn't seem to be the case. It has 32- and 64-bit.

The only thing that seems to be the problem with integrating 'DX10' in with older OSes, when it used to be backwards-compatible, is that Vista has had their WDDM completely redone...which means it was a system built exclusively for Vista and the term DX10, by what MS writes, is misleading.

There have been projects like Alky Project that have made DX10 substitutes but even they're crashing out these days...

Of course, one can duck Vista by using (unfortunately expensive) server editions, which are made to compete in a far more crowded market. And thus, are less likely to suck.

I think. (Using 2003 Server's equivalent, XP x64)

  • User Account Control (sure it works for security, but it works even better at being so annoying I disable it)
  • Filesize refresh bug in Explorer's status bar (and the total size isn't shown when nothing is selected)
  • RAM usage, and not only because of Aero (which does use a lot by itself) ... compare my slimmed down XP and Vista (both with everything closed) to see what I mean
  • More wasted disk space (I got it this low without breaking things too much)
  • Even more useless services enabled by default
  • Memory leaks in some of the services (like the one for sound), even Explorer grows in size with time
  • The sidebar (which runs 2 processes) is just like running another instance of Internet Explorer 7 with small Javascript pages, which can also have memory leaks
  • Boot screen (the "No GUI" boot looks better), but that isn't much of a problem
  • Moving/copying files apparently takes longer
And probably more I forgot

I have it at work and it's still not that bad after some tweaking, but I'm still not switching from XP here ... even with a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate on a DVD-R (which I only got to mess around with in VMWare)

Wait...people actually like the way Vista looks?

Call me old-fashioned, but I rather prefer the old 9x/NT look. It's simple, it's functional, and it leaves plenty of screen real estate and system resources free for actual programs to use (gasp!). Why people choose to waste CPU and video resources on transparent title bars and massive, shiny buttons and icons is beyond me...

I prefer the Windows 3.11 look, myself.

But I'm completely insane.

Either way, 95/98/NT 'Classic' appearance > Vista bloated garbage.

Heck, Mac and Linux ones look better too. And move faster!

Vista's theme actually does look better than XP's default "Fisher-Price" (not so much without Aero), but it doesn't really take much for that

I've stayed with Classic here too, using the same custom color scheme for nearly 6 years now ... the only way I'd ever be satisfied with a theme anyway would be to make it myself, since the small simple ones aren't exactly common

I've still wondered what the great improvement of Windows XP over Windows 2000 is, myself Or course, Microsoft's business model pretty much depends on releasing a new Windows every few years (Conspiracy Theory: Vista was released crappy so that they get the benefits of a new product launch after a shorter amount of time, and still get the money from people who they did convince to buy Vista) so that's not really going to change...

Technically, no matter how bad the OS is, they'll make money from it by forcing vendors to include it by default.

So I don't think it's a surprise that Vista is crud. They have no motivation; they make money whether or not it sucks or rocks.

Therefore until they have serious competition (Read: Copyright-violating Linux OS which can run Windows programs) I don't see them shaping up any time soon. Except they do seem to care more about Business customers. :p
