Drag's Post #550
Warning, long post.

So yeah, I just got around to playing this last night, and I didn't like it. I liked the other two Halos, but yeah, let me explain.

I'm not an online multiplayer gamer for games like this. I'm also pretty bad at FPS games in general. Halo 1 was amazing, I got into the storyline, and it overall was the most fun I've had with a FPS in a long time. Halo 2 comes around, and it's even better because you get to play as an Elite. Lots of people probably hate it, but dammit, I thought it was awesome. It ends on a cliffhanger, so yeah, that was pretty annoying.

Halo 3 comes around, and like the other two Halos, I get it for the campaign mode, because, once again, I'm not a good FPS gamer, and I certainly don't stand a chance online with all of those counterstrikers and other people who have nothing better to do. With campaign mode, I can go at my own pace.

So anyway, I only played through the first stage on normal mode, and it took me about an hour and a half to complete it.

So first off, it's *really* easy to get completely utterly lost. There's so much shit on the screen, I can't freaking what the paths are, that the AI seems to notice just fine. So yeah, because of this, I'm reluctant to be ahead of everyone. But they don't proceed unless I lead, so yeah, that's annoying. There are places where you can fall off, and NOW you need to find the way back up, while there's *nothing* you can do to help your allies with the enemies. And yeah, I usually just start-a-up-a in this case, because it's going to take way too long for me to find how to get the hell back up.

So my next gripe is with the enemies. They're usually fine when there's only one or two brutes and a few grunts, but there's one section of the game that I got stuck on for most of the time, where you jump into this huge open area, and there are swarms of brutes and grunts everywhere.

I literally was start-a-up-a every 10 seconds (because I don't want to sit through the 10 second camera-flyaround of OOPS YOU DIED). Now, I know I suck at FPS games, but that *never* hindered me during the first two Halos. Even on normal, I was able to get through each level, with an average amount of effort, considering my low skill level. But nope, not here, because the difficulty curve is so sharp.

So anyway, about an hour of dying every 10 seconds without making any progress whatsoever (NOT fun) later, I finally get checkpointed as I'm about to run off a cliff into instant-death water. Luckily I don't get stuck into a looping death trap, but yeah, one more INCH and I would die.

So I'm astounded that the AI Arbiter can single-handedly stand up to these huge hoards of enemies that I kept dying to. Yeah, THAT makes me feel really good, the *AI* does better than I do. I know I suck at FPS games already, thanks. In a little while, I find out what the *real* reason why he can stand up to these guys is.

So I go through a shed or something, and there's another narrow open section with some brutes and grunts. One brute has the gravity hammer, so naturally, I want to get it from him. So I'm shooting him with whatever that rocket shooter thing is (the one that makes explosions that, you know, kills things), and it takes me 10 shots, and he's STILL not dead. I can't stick him with a plasma grenade, because it bounces off him. Gee thanks.

So 50 deaths later, Arbiter finds a sword somewhere, and he runs in and takes on the gravity hammer guy. So I sit and watch as the Arbiter gets hit with the gravity hammer 5 whole times, with his purple blood particles flying everywhere (the thing is supposed to be an instant-kill in *one* hit, and it's supposed to send you flying across the stage), before he finally swords the brute for the 10th time, FINALLY killing the guy.

That really annoyed the hell out of me. WHY is Arbiter following me anyway? MOREOVER, WHY IS HE INVINCIBLE?! It goes against EVERYTHING Halo used to be. I don't have to proceed through any section at all now. I can just duck out, and let Arbiter kill everyone. He's invincible after all. Don't get me wrong, I like the Arbiter. His parts were my favorite in Halo 2. But why didn't they have his parts be seperate from the Chief's, like in Halo 2? It worked better that way, if you ask me.

Finally, I get through the game, but I'm so pissed off at this point, I don't even bother playing any further. I won't be surprised if I never continue this game.

So yeah, not a very good first impression. I'm *NOT* going to buy an xbox live gold account, just to have my ass handed to me repeatedly by guys who play this game religiously.

So yeah, I don't like Halo 3 very much. Halo 1 was the best, Halo 2 was good, but Halo 3 has too many things that I dislike.

Disclaimer: This is only my opinion. Yours may and probably will differ.

You haven't seen hell until you've been to the second to last stage.

Let me tell you, if you thought the rest of the game kicked your ass, this will kick your ass until you are wearing it as a hat.
I mean I did normal and I was fairly good at campaign on Halo 2, only dying on the final final part of the game. In Halo 3, I kept dying, and on that mission I refused to ever, ever get this game. That mission was so horrible on Normal I could not stand it.

Is the game ok? Yeah, its ok. But the difficulty is stupidly hard for the sakes of being hard (because who gives a shit if its fun, right?) and the multiplayer (depending on how your friends are like) is horrible, as the only way to actually enjoy it is if you only care about winning.

It annoyed me how Halo 2 ended with a cliffhanger, and yet Halo 3 doesn't pick up where the second left off.

Oh well, I'll probably get this at some point, just to play through. I'll probably never go online, because you need to pay for it, which annoys me.

Wow, harsh comments indeed. I personally very much enjoyed Halo 1. I utterly and completely loved Halo 2. And I wish I could marry Halo 3 its so awesome. First of, I find it interesting that you (Drag) mention how "the *AI* does better than I do" and consider it a negative. People almost always complain how the ally AI in FPS games sucks and gets killed too easily, you now complain that the ally AI is too good and doesn't die? hehe Just an interesting observation.

Also, in Halo 3's defense, that first jungle level is probably the ONLY level without a very clear path through the level. Not like there are actual branching paths that lead to dead ends though. I actually find all Halo games too linear for my taste, especially when compared to PC FPS's like Half Life.

Again, compared to most other FPS(console or PC), the amount "of shit on screen" is minimal really. Play a 32 online match of Unreal Tournament 3, now THATS alot of shit on screen and chaos and shit...and chaos

And then well for the difficulty in general, I mean..cmon...hehe I realize thats not a very articulate response but...cmon I most certainly do not consider myself a FPS master, yet Halo 3 on Normal or Heroic difficulty is by far the easiest of the Halos. Ample ammo, frequent checkpoints, grenades a plenty, vehicle availability. I believe the developers most defenetly made the funnest game they could.

Legendary difficulty is basically an entirely different game. You stop having fun in this difficulty, and start formulating strategies and honing your skills for online gaming, but its always been like that.

I have no real glaring issue with the campaign mode and I most certainly have nothing but great things to say about Forge mode. 3 buddies + Forge mode + every player can edit mode + explosions = teh fun!!!1

Fun that rivals Super Smash Bros Melee Fun

But of course..

No he is talking about his invincible little buddy the Arbiter.
And the AI in this game is retarded. The enemies? No. ANYONE ON YOUR SIDE? DUR LET'S RUN INTO A ROCK! I had this happen to me literally. They drove right in the middle of a rock and kept pushing forward. Never once in Halo 2 did this happen to me yet in 3 it happened three times.

Unreal Tournament was ALWAYS like that and supposed to be like that. Its a chaotic game.

Halo 3 on Normal is harder than Halo 2 Normal. I play Halo 2 Normal a lot, even do Heroic, and don't die but maybe once or twice out of stupidity. Halo 3 I died a lot. It wasn't due to it actually being hard. It just jumped all over the place. At one point I felt invincible and others I felt like I was getting my ass handed to me everytime. It was not at all one difficulty but it jumped around too much for it to be considered "just normal."
Example: In the first stage (I remember this clearly) there is a bridge and you go under it first. Going under it as I did I turned that corner and every time I died. No matter what strategy they killed me every time. Now this was on Normal my first playthrough and, while I didn't know the level much, I memorized this entire part because I kept respawning right before it too many times (I still know it if that helps). Rest of the level I survived with absolutely no issues, yet I could not tell you what the rest of the level was since I only played through the game once.

I have no real glaring issue with the campaign mode and I most certainly have nothing but great things to say about Forge mode. 3 buddies + Forge mode + every player can edit mode + explosions = teh fun!!!1
Forge Mode was the supposed "map editor" I heard about. I was hoping for full-fledged editor and I got... object placement.
I would have settled for a Timesplitters editor at least. Object editing to me is ok, but when I heard "map editor" I expected "map editor."

What does this have to do with anything?

Not trying to be too defensive about it, so don't take it too seriously. Just I really dislike Halo 3 compared to the previous games (plus I actually wanted to do a defending post thingymajig).
Halo 1 did a great job at being a staple FPS game in all aspects.
2 just kind of... tried too hard to be better and, while it did improve a few things, it was lacking in content. The story was made half-assed to me (not that it was an epic story to begin with, but halo 2 made it more blah).
Halo 3 didn't even do much to me story-wise. It was just really... just there.

Also teconmoon: What does that have to do with anything? This isn't Smash Bros so comparing the two is moot.

I don't really see what the two pairs of games have in common, I think you're in the wrong thread.

They don't have things in common, I'm just stating that one series is better than the other.

How is it better?

I find that Halo 3 is not bad, but it isn't the GRAND GAME that people are making it out to be. Its basically your average FPS only hyped by the name.

I will agree with you on that point. As soon as Halo 2 was released, the hype for Halo 3 started building. Like I said, I do find Halo 3 to be one of the funnest FPS's on any console, but its not the second coming of Christ like it was hyped to be. No game is.

The way they kept the "secret of the x button" thing was pretty stupid. I mean, I have to remind myself to use equipment its so trivial. And the only reason I brought up SSBM was to compare "level of fun with buddies" OBVIOUSLY you cannot find 2 more different games. Its just that when my buddies come over to play. First we play SSBM, Halo 3, Rock Band, then whatever.

Oh and last night after posting my first reply, I went back and finally beat legendary mode solo. Yeah thats not fun.

If I get Halo 3 at some point, I'll be using a tunneller to play online, if such a thing exists. (I think so, but you never know)

New maps = meh.
I mute the voices anyway, cause I'm usually playing with little kids around.
