13-inch, 0.75" thick notebook, anyone?

Very impressive, but I wonder what is the battery life of this thing? The parts seem very delicate too (like seems the hinge is the weakpoint of the entire thing).

A laptop without a removable battery...?

I'll pass, thanks.

It's impressive from a technical standpoint, but I don't see much point to it otherwise- the size advantage isn't really that great, especially when you consider that you'll need a laptop case to carry it around with you anyway... The one thing I will say is that the multi-touch pad is pretty cool, though it'll probably show up on the standard MacBooks soon enough.

Mmm shiny. And tiny

I'd be terrified that I'd break it though! Mmm, very nice though, I look forward to ogling one at the Apple store here. (Well... by that I mean Next Byte... we don't have an Apple Apple store.)

Yet another fancy Mac thing I'll look at, say "That's cool", then move on and buy a PC-based thing instead.

Still ,it is cool.

Umm, a paper-thin laptop? Why?

Also...this should really be in the computing forum .

Why not? And it's a portability thing. There is a market for "ultra-portable" laptops, things that are light as a feather and can be taken anywhere.

The Toshiba Libretto is another example of an ultra-portable laptop, this tiny little thing (not that thin though).

As for the battery stuff, it seems like replacing it isn't too big an issue. Installation of replacement battery to be free, battery itself about $130.

Almost every touchpad on Macs and non-Macs alike for like the last 7 years are able to detect multiple pressure points... the only thing actually impressive is that they bothered to make software to take advantage of the fact.

Hm, interesting- I don't have a laptop computer and pretty much never use them, so I didn't know that...

It'd be neat if they would make a Mac that had a touchscreen covering the whole screen and controlled like that... (still would probably need a mouse for some things, and keyboard because touch-screen typing is nowhere near as good as actually typing something, and would probably come with a high price tag, but one can dream...)

That looks nice , but I'll doubt that I will get it. I'm fine with my current laptop. And if I would get it, I wouldn't like to break it, but it still looks nice .

1. USB supports daisy chaining. Theoretically up to 128 devices per bus, though realistically most controllers are limited to 30~50 (doubtful you'd even have that much plugged in). Buy a bus
2. USB ethernet dongles exist, if you need it.
3. DVD drives exist that operate over USB.

It's still perfectly functional if you know the caveats and what USB-based hardware to buy.

Yes, but it kinda defeats the point of being small, you know?

No, not exactly. The point is being ultra portable, not doing everything a desktop does (if you really want that, get a MacBook Pro). The point is that it can be carried around easier (lighter) than usual notebooks, and still get your work done on the go; you usually won't need to load DVDs or plug in ethernet cables if you're on a plane or train. I forgot to note, that USB flash drives also exist for transferring data.

This isn't a stupid move at all, there's a market for this notebook, and not everyone fits into it. Also, it's nowhere close to the truly moronic move Apple did in the 90s with the iMac: remove the floppy drive, and it didn't even have a CD-R burner (this was before Firewire or USB got popular, or even known to the general public)

It is small and very pretty, but that's where my attraction ends.

If all I needed was a machine on the go, it'd be perfect - but I was hoping for a speedier processor and a basic independent graphics package from nVidia or ATI. Everything else is great about the hardware - particularly the weight and the backlit keyboard.

BUT I would've gotten one anyway if it hadn't have been for the price. Before VAT, people in the UK are paying £120 more than people in the US. That's an incredible ripoff. The similarly-specced Macbook clocks in at just over half the price. I don't really want to pay that kind of premium for what is arguably a lesser machine. As it stands, the Macbook Air is now in the price range that I was considering for the entry-level Macbook Pro. I'd much rather spend the extra cash for more power - why should I pay Apple more to take stuff out?

I guess all I want is a 13" Macbook Pro to replace the Powerbook 12". Small, fairly specified yet clearly priced below the 15" and 17" models.

So, I'm going to wait for the Macbook Pro refresh. I know Apple's going to sell loads of Airs, but I think I can afford to lose a little portability over a lot of power

Yeah, I'm not for "portability"

I like big-ass computers if possible

510 Heh, and here I am still on my 2003 laptop... With a dead monitor backlight, battery, USB port (one works), and a CD drive that's dying.

I'll take my DS and PSP if I want portability. :/

Some people really do need portability. Like technicians that have to do things out on-site a lot. My arsehole ex used to use a Libretto for a lot of long-distance wireless set up and troubleshooting, he'd have to climb onto roofs with it and such. I'm not one of those people, so all this is really good for for me is the "oh wow" factor.

If I needed something ultra-portable, then sure, it's nifty. And I'm glad to see that Apple have released something for that market. It's just not for me.
