It was only a matter of time, I'm sure, but MAKE: provided a few Gizmodo staffers with TV-B-Gones to bring to CES. (For those unfamiliar, the TV-B-Gone's a glorified universal remote that only turns TV's off.) And so, said staffers used them at CES.

Oh, did they ever.

So, for their disruptive shenanigans, including knocking out a couple of TV's during a Motorola speech, one of the staffers is banned for life, and CES is looking into further sanctions. Anyone laugh at this, or just roll their eyes?

What were they even given this for, anyway? Since I'm sure this wasn't the planned use

I like the comments on this page too (linked from there), probably both by the same person but still

What I like about the comments page is how it says the 3 1/2 star average rating comes from two reviews, one with a rating of 5 and the other with a rating of 1.

(1 + 5) / 2 ≠ 3 1/2. It equals 3 exactly. Stupid page.

Pah, I think it's silly and childish. TV-B-Gone is for annoying TVs, not ones you've paid to watch. Like, if you have an annoying one in a lobby or something.

I can't expect to see Gizmondo news on CES in the recent future, especially since they went as far to videotape it.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that was the intended use. Well, maybe not during an actual presentation...

This is childish, stupid, and I'm glad they got banned.

That said, it's also hilarious.

I always wanted to get a decent GBC flash cart and write a TV-B-Gone program for it. This in particular though is pretty dumb, though funny to see.

I thought up an alternate name for the topic.

CES: 1, Gizmondo: Stupid

As technically, no matter what you consider Gizmondo's points, it's stupid. (Insert meme here)

I thought that it was hilarious that they used that at CES. I would guess that they got banned, oh well.

Banned for life? It sounds more like they stole exhibits that switched them off. Yeah, they should've only done it a handful of times and posted it anonymously, but a ban for life? Sounds like Motorola threw a hissy fit.

Funny as hell though

Really, the video is funny but I think the real question is how long the TVs stayed off for. If we're talking hours, then they kinda deserve the ban, but a 1/2 hour-? Naaah. Berate me for it, but it sounds like something my friends and I might do. Though not to that degree.

They were rather stupid for taking credit for it.

It was mildly funny but, meh.

Oh, yes, it'd be quite fun to just go turn some random TVs off in a situation like that, but don't be an asshole and shut down someone's big important presentation. Or at least turn it right back on afterward.
(Granted, if you're giving such an important presentation that depends heavily on a TV working, covering the IR port would be a good idea. I bet they do that next time. )

It's no different than turning them off with a remote. They can just be turned right back on.

Come to think of it, I did similar when I was a kid. Grabbed the remote for the CD player and when someone tried to open it to put a disc in, I'd close it again before it fully opened. They were like WTF? And at that age, it was hilarious.

Turning it off during a video game.

That's low. I don't even do that when I'm losing or being an ass.
