If you've been in the IRC channel recently, you may have heard me complaining about my aging and malfunctioning laptop monitor. In a nutshell: I couldn't see anything unless I bent it a certain way, flickering, odd lines, etc.

Well, today, I finally got fed up with it, and decided to break it for good.

One
Two
Three
Four
And the end result:
Five

Well, that was fun, but now what should I do with it? The computer itself works fine (and I'm using my TV as a display), but it seems kind of pointless to keep the monitor attached now

If it's possible, detach it. You have no use for a broken moniter, so turn your laptop into a sort of keyboard that has a computer on it. Other than that, I have no idea what you could do.

Work out how to mod the computer into a tablet PC.

It'd be like a modern day version of those 80s computers like the Commodore 64 or the Atari 400

I have several pieces of computer electronics that I'd like to smash, but have so far resisted the urge

I just suggested doing what I did with mine; hooking up an external keyboard/mouse/speakers and monitor.

I did that, but since I didn't snap my monitor into pieces, I now have a dual-monitor setup with my laptop on my desk.

Hm, my laptop has a similar problem. :-/ The display is fine, but the wire to the backlight is loose, so it flickers. I wonder how long before it comes right off, and how difficult/expensive that is to fix.

Number 2 looks like you threw one of those preset Photoshop gradients over your monitor.

Yeah, my monitor for my PC is being stupid too, at random times (Usually within 2-10 minutes of each other) it starts getting brighter, then shrinks, stretches, and then it stays like that until I touch the monitor or bang on the side. I've degaussed in the middle of it thousands of times and it never did anything, so I'm assuming it's certainly something internal that is going. My only problem is that I need to get another monitor now...

That last image reminds me of my LCD screen on my first version of my D807 cell phone I had. It overheated on a crack and eventually there was nothing but a blob of LCD ink on it. Thankfully I got it replaced free of charge.

I have a replacement monitor coming in this week for myself when my Dell secondary monitor bit the dust. This was right after I got a duplicate Dell monitor two weeks earlier to put dual-screen shiz to work. I'm glad I got the duplicate, since the original was the one to shit out on me. Also have a RAM stick coming in because one ALSO busted.

With our old laptop, the hinges broke, so the monitor almost came free of it's own accord Stupid thing. I could almost lift it off the base of the laptop, and it still worked perfectly.

Actually, that reminds me of some interesting things my monitors do.
The left one takes ages to power on. The right one has a finicky power button that you really have to massage to operate, and then it likes to shut off again as soon as you get it on. The right one also has this weird glitch where when the computer is starting up, it will sometimes gradually bring the bottom half of the backlight up to full intensity until it's solid white and looks like it's going to explode. I generally turn it off when it does this. Finally, the left one is a bit dumb with its menus; if a menu is open when the signal is gained or lost, it closes the menu. Pushing the input select button brings up a menu, so this can be annoying if you want to switch inputs just after powering off the device, causing it to close the menu while you're using it. Worse, if you accidentally select HDMI without anything plugged in, the menus will cease to work at all and you'll have to power it on and off several times and disconnect and reconnect everything before it will let you change inputs. (For more fun, Windows hates it when you do this.)

These glitches are annoying, but not enough for me to bother exchanging them, so I live with them. They should both have a year or two of warranty left anyway in case it gets any worse. (Also, I suspect the backlight problem may be related to the video card - it didn't happen with the old one - and the taking ages to start up could be a Windows thing, taking ages to actually realize the monitor is on and start giving it a signal.)

Upon further reflection, it could've probably been repaired, but this laptop is a couple of years old and I'm in need of a new one. What I'll probably do is:
1. Detach monitor
2. Get wireless keyboard and audio cable
3. Hook laptop to TV
4. Let the awesome begin
I'm already on the way to having this setup, actually. (Yay for poor-quality image )

It reminds me of the first moniter that I had for this computer. It turns on normally and works for at least 30 minutes, until it decides to start messing aroung and make the display "jump" of sorts. I will have to turn it off or a few minutes and turn it back on, only to have it start messing up again. I got a new moniter because of that reason.

I just got a new monitor a couple days ago. It's a 42" plasma HDTV with a built in tuner and I have my Wii hooked up to it as well. My old one was some 19" LCD. I enjoy this much better!

I dunno what it is with you guys and monitors, but my ancient ZEOS 20+ year old CRT is still going. I'd sooner smash my own skull in than it, as luck would have it there's still computers which can use it properly laying around.

The only monitor I've seen die was a cheap one which literally exploded. But it sucked anyway, as it lasted less than a year.

I have a 15" SVGA monitor from 1992 that still works...mostly. It has a short somewhere that causes the screen to flicker and warp until it warms up (or you smack it enough), and the color's slightly faded in the corners, but aside from that it works fine. It seems to be a pretty high-end model, too, with an LED mode display on the front and custom screen settings for 4 (?) different users! I've cranked it to unusually high resolutions, i.e. 1280x1024, and it doesn't even break a sweat.

Of course, none of those features are uncommon nowadays (except maybe the multi-user settings), so I really only keep it around as a backup of a backup of...a backup.

Yea, I just ended up getting an Acer 17" monitor just yesterday (for ~150 dollars) to go with the 17" Dell (2003 dated) monitor that was replacing a same-model 17" Dell (2002 dated) for a dual-monitor setup.

The only problem is the Acer monitor is just slightly large in height for picture than the other Dell (even though they're, supposedly, the same size)...so I have a small gap at the bottom of the Acer screen. Nothing terrible but it's noticeable if I'm cranky to look at it the half-inch or so difference...but the tops are aligned for picture so I don't really care that much.

There are a bunch of old CRT monitors sitting on a table in the computer science department with signs on them that say "FREE, PLEASE TAKE."

They've been there all semester, and not a single one has disappeared.

My monitor is a basic Dell CRT (e773, if I recall correctly). It's chugged along since 2004 with absolutely no problems, no matter what other hardware gives me bullshit.

I'd love to have RCA inputs on my PC though...
