Ooh, that's a good question! I had to think about it a bit, but I'd say Mack. Besides being fun to look at, the design process itself was a fun challenge. It has just the right balance of complexity and simplicity and doesn't have any obvious design flaws. It will be hard for me to top it!

what's your favourite yet most obscure kirby enemy? like, the one that has the best balance between the two qualitites i guess. what are your thoughts on it as a design? how would you think a remodel of it and redesign would work, and perhaps even fit narratively?

This is a tricky one, as I have a lot of obscure favorites. If you count bosses, then Heavy Mole from Kirby's Adventure probably fits that description. Its so obscure, HAL didn't even depict it correctly when it appeared as a keychain in Triple Deluxe.

Of course, I already modeled Heavy Mole and even made a "DX" version of it for fun. I'd love to see it return for future games, but it would need a significant overhaul to make the design work better from a 3D view. Because of the curved surface, the "angry" eye and blade line just look like a droopy eye and goofy smile when viewed from the side, at least in my own attempt.

will you make Kirby vs Shy Guy #480 canon? what are your retrospective thoughts on your comic? it clearly took a lot of your popularity and your spotlight, for better or worse, and seems like it stalled a lot. do you regret its scope? do you feel it was a really good gateway for an audience and granted you interesting skills? did you have a concrete ending planned out?

First off, I've never really given up on KvSG, it's just been on the backburner... for six years. In some respects, I do regret the amount of increased production value that came with the most recent story arc, but maybe not for the reason you might expect.

The biggest reason the comic stalled is the same reason all of my other projects have dwindled: my responsibilities at The Models Resource and my job. My job as a programmer took up a lot of time and mental energy, especially as the projects became more complex and the team became smaller. I was often too tired after work to do anything productive on the weekdays. As the backlog of models grew larger and harder to manage, I found that I couldn't spend any significant time on personal projects without feeling guilty that I wasn't reviewing models instead. I would gladly spend over an hour of free time to produce a really fun single comic strip, but not when it's an hour that I should be spending on my duties. This is why I haven't made any more Majora's Mask maps and ultimately put myself on hiatus in 2020. Other than that, I don't regret aiming for a bigger scope.

The comic has always been an outlet for me to try experiment with creativity. Sometimes, the focus of a strip is less about the joke or story and more about trying out a neat visual effect. It was a great way for me to try out different sprite art styles, image editing techniques, effects, and even 3D modeling. Not all of the experiments were successful, so it's a bit embarrassing to look back on. I'm glad that so many people here enjoyed it, despite its flaws.

I've never thought of an ending for the comic. In fact, I have the opposite: a text document with no less than six future story arc ideas. If the comic ever were to have an official end, it would likely involve Kirby accidentally pressing a button that blows up the world or something. Nothing dramatic or sappy, just "oops" and gone.

Believe it or not, it's been so long since I've played the game properly that I barely remember the fights in terms of gameplay. Going by just design and setting, I'd say the Axem Rangers. Fighting a powerful team of baddies atop an airship over a volcano is pretty spectacular.

As the author of a long-ish running one, what works come to mind when you think about other sprite comics? Are there any that served as an inspiration in particular?

I know there were some really popular ones featuring Mega Man or Final Fantasy characters, but I didn't read those. When I think of other sprite comics, I mainly think of the three that inspired me: Neglected Mario Characters, Planet Zebeth, and Cutenessยฒ + Evilnessยณ = Kirby.

I probably don't need to say much about NMCC. It's a classic, and its silly humor is probably most similar to the sort of dumb, spontaneous gags I sometimes use in KvSG. It's also probably part of why I like Tweeters so much.

Planet Zebeth is the sole reason I have such an appreciation for Metroid 1, thanks in no small part to the incredible website that let you hunt for secrets in the page layout. Its darker humor also sometimes shows in KvSG. When this site's banner ads became infected with malware, it affected my home computer and laptop. I started avoiding the site for a while to be safe, and I haven't read the comic since.

The site for Cยฒ+Eยณ=K may be gone now, but you can find it on the internet archive. It's probably the reason that I chose Kirby as one of the stars of KvSG. The absurd spinoff, Multi Pong Reply, was also pretty inspirational to me.

oh no, i'm sorry if i came accross as saying you had given up or it or with a negative impression! i just considered that too and was curious about a retrospective. i did notice a lot of it involved not just experimentation, but also one kinda can see your progress with getting used to many different techniques through it. it was nice to see!

i notice a lot of the games you reference tend to be interesting nintendo offshoots, so-- which is likewise your favourite obscure nintendo game? it can be not really obscure but often overlooked, like mario+rabbids, or something like their fds visual novels or vs unisystem versions of games

I don't play too many super-obscure games, but one particular gem does come to mind. There is a DSiWare title called Starship Defense (or Starship Patrol in Europe) that I bought on my 3DS. It was made by Nintendo and Q-Games (Dylan Cuthbert's company), and yet Nintendo has yet to mention it again, not even in Smash Ultimate.

The game is a solid little tower defense game with a space theme and a unique art style. Each level has you protecting various space ships or stations from waves of various enemies, each with their own behaviors. Enemies take varying paths around the ships while attacking with projectiles and contact damage, forcing you to think up flexible strategies. Even though there aren't many weapons at your disposal, there's a lot of room for strategizing. There are only 30 levels, but they can get pretty difficult. In fact, I still have yet to beat the last mission.

With the 3DS eShop going away soon, I highly recommend nabbing it before it is too late!
